| Re: Memories of some old friends Thanks guys for weighing in. CC you have a great collection, hope you build them one day. Here's a plane I always wanted to build but never happened to acquire: the Hawker Typhoon. When this comes out in diecast one day, I'll be first in line to buy one. ![]() ![]() Here are some more favorite models of times past. ![]() ![]() ![]() | |||||||||||||

| Re: Memories of some old friends I had all of those Monogram US Navy birds. I remember heating sewing needles to make bullet holes in the fuselage, wings and canopy. I remember the SBD would drop the centerline bomb with a push button, and I want to say the Avenger would drop a torpedo too. Great memories. | |||||||||||||

Wow Ara... you are really bringing back the memories! I built several of these Monogram kits. I have busted parts of several in a box; I still have some of the boxes. Regarding the Typhoon kit: I found this unbuilt kit in a toy box this summer while we stayed in an Oregon Coast vacation home. I was soooooo tempted to take it home with me, but alas, I left it as I found it. | ||||||||||||||

| Re: Memories of some old friends How many of you bought this kit back in 1980? Btw, a lot of the Monogram kits came with some awesome diorama brochures done by Sheperd Paine. I still have the 1/48th B-17G that he did called "Pretty in Pink"...talk about the good 'ol days of modeling! | |||||||||||||

| Re: Memories of some old friends I LOVED that Dauntless kit. Built one of those when I was about 10 and remember that I spent years running around the house bombing everything in sight, including the fish tank that we had for a bried time. Scare the beejesus out of the fish and irratated my mom to no end. There were no end of Japanese carriers to sink. ![]() | |||||||||||||

| Oh wow -- such great memories! I too built many of those 1:48 scale Monogram fighters. Lemme see; Mosquito, Hurricane, Corsair, Dauntless, P-38, Avenger, P-40B, Kingfisher, (Hellcat, Wildcat??). There was also a number of other late 50s/early 60s odd scales like the C-47, B-66 and B-58, for instance. I remember Monogram for having the BEST fit overall and the nicest to build -- regardless of scale. Airfix was my choice for the 'heavies'. (Never Revell) All my bombers came from there; Lancaster, B-17G (BoL), Halifax, Wellington, for example. Revell was only the very early days ('61-'63). Those 1:72 scale fighters were a pain for a very young 8 year old modeller starting out. FYI: The very first model plane I EVER built was a Revell Kawasaki Hien (Tony). A buddy of mine 'lifted it' for me (NO -- I didn't ask him to!) from his fathers store room! To make matters better, he was in Scouts with me. My Brother still has it on display (behind the bar) complete with the 'battle damage'(!) He drags it out once in a while when we start talking aircraft models and we've had a few. I should buy him the IXO one for old time sake. I was a busy boy in those days -- no wonder my elementary school grades suffered! | |||||||||||||
