Diecast, Significant Others, and You ...

From what I gather, our wives’ and/or girlfriends’ attitudes vary about our diecast mania. Some are completely “OK” with it. Some just tolerate it. And others downright resent it (look out below!!!).

Which brings me to this question: Does your significant other support your addiction? Does she indulge your lunacy with nary a bent eyebrow, or does she heft a rolling pin when you so much as approach the phone or computer to place an order?

My wife is a dream. I tell her what I want, I buy it, and she’s completely happy with it. No complaints. No cajoling. No nitpicking.

Is anybody else out there that lucky, or do you have to hide your purchases? Is your significant other OK with your addiction, or would she just as soon whack you upside the head?xx

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

Re: Diecast, Significant Others, and You ...

Oh Gort, you are truly a brave soul to be asking this question.

My wife married me knowing that I love to collect plastic models. For years she just accepted my "addiction" and never complained. Then I stopped modeling and sold off all my models. Now I've started collecting diecast planes. Her concern is of course "cost" and space. She still does not get upset if I buy a model - in fact, she's bought several for me for Christmas from the Mule. She just asks that I let her know a box is coming. We've got a new agreement. I can buy any plane I want as long as I save up the cash to pay off the credit card charge within two months. This has slowed my uncontrolled spending on every plane out there and has really increased my enjoyment of our hobby because now I hunt for bargains and I've become VERY selective about what I buy. She even praises me when I buy a plane well below retail and save money.

In our house it's always been pay as you go. My wife's biggest concern is space, and how much space is devoted to diecast. As a doll collector, she is more understanding than most.

Re: Diecast, Significant Others, and You ...

I would have to say that my fiance is OK with my purchases. She likes to give me little digs every now and then, especially when a bunch of pre orders hit all at once and there is a box at the house almost every other day for a week. I thinks she does this because she knows that I'm concerned on how she'll react. But its all in fun. I don't go out drinking all the time, don't smoke, go fishing with the boys maybe once a year so this is my one vice that she puts up with. What I'm not to sure about is when I get my den finished and able to display my full collection, is how she will take it. Right now I have maybe 30 or so planes about the rec room and computer room. I'm not even to sure how many I own because they are still packed away but I am thinking its touching 180 to 200 right now with more to come. Bring on the Halifax.

My wife at first tolerated my little obsession, then began to resent it somewhat for awhile, and now all of a sudden in the past few months, she's actually taken a small interest in my passion. She even shocked me the other night and commented on a few of my P-40 Flying Tigers I had out in the basement, and I quote, "The ones with the sharks mouth on them are kind of cool looking." After I woke up from fainting in disbelief, she acutally said I should bring them up and put them in the new book shelf/display cabinet thingy she just bought. So now I have 3 P-40s (Jim may be on to something) parked in our living room...which previously was unheard of in our house! Anyway, I think she's beginning to come around, but as HotTrap mentioned, I've limited myself on my purchases and try to keep the price tags reasonable.

My bride of 49 years is very much in tune with my hobby. In fact, she's partly responsible for my really getting involved with diecast aircraft collecting. Years ago Amaco (BP) had a special offer: a P-51, a P-40 and a Spitfire, all for $20.00. They were of poor quality, of course, but the horse was out of the barn and there's been no getting off that bronco. Now I have 155 models, mostly WW II era, in my hanger and she's even gotten to the point where she'll opine on the quality of the purchase. She absolutely loves the "Stringbag".

How would she know otherwise??? I get alittle flak now and again, but in the end I always get what I want.

Re: Diecast, Significant Others, and You ...

My wife, Saucy Susie/Suzy Q, tells me my limits. She is the home decorator and knows what makes the place look nice. Limited space is the deciding factor. I know that I will eventually have to make some decisions--and may have to do as others do: rotate the stock. Now, with a mix of 1:144 and 1:48, I can manage. But shelf space is at a premium.

This afternoon it took me hours to dust all those little wings and noses--with a makeup brush my wife bought me.

She puts up with the poster of Mustangs, the few pictures on the wall, and the little models sharing the shelves with the DVD collection. But this is the woman who bought me a $400 ride on the Nine-O-Nine for a birthday present. (I pay back with diamonds....)

I have a little "hobby" budget from extra work I do. I have a dollar limit per month, which includes books and magazines. I have cut back, and so there is more peace in the house than when I started. BUT she knows how much things cost.

Her biggest gripe, though, is "Not another Mustang book! You must have them all by now." My response is, "You can never have enough shoes...."

"Arguably, the Mustang was the best [single-engine] fighter plane that ever flew...."

Re: Diecast, Significant Others, and You ...

My wife's "A dream." Mostly because SHE is the big spender in the family, so she has no grounds to complain about me. I actually am a spendthrift, with somewhat of an exception when it comes to aircraft. Still, though, I am not spending much these days, as one can't (or at least shouldn't) spend what one does not have!

PS: Gort, thanks for starting this thread...I've really enjoyed reading the responses.
