Mighty Metal vs. Plastic

If I’m rehashing a topic we’ve already whipped to death, sue me. (I searched the threads up, down and sideways but couldn’t find it). And even if we have, let’s do it over again!

How many of you guys think plastic in diecast models profanes all that’s holy? A real, low-down betrayal of metal magnificence?

Do you demand high metal content in your models? Ninety percent? Eighty percent, perhaps?

Or are you like a growing number of model aficionados who couldn’t care less if their models are mostly plastic? Where do you draw the line?

For me, metal is nice, but precision is nicer. If models (take Dragon Armor, for example) look terrific with more plastic than metal, so be it. I’m game. On the other hand, if models (like Hobby Master’s new KV-1 and Cromwell) look just as good using much more metal, all the better.

In other words, I’m not a metal purist. Heft is just ducky, but refinement is duckier (is that a word?).

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

Re: Mighty Metal vs. Plastic

I just voted for "who cares." However, if I'm PAYING for diecast, I would prefer plenty of metal, but I love my plastic premade models also-MRC and 21st Century are great!

PS Gort, you've made me curious...anyone know how the word "ducky," as Gort used it, came to be?

I would love a 1:72 scale Vulcan from Corgi & if that means a greater plastic content then thats fine with me.

Cap, if my metal memory is working correctly (and that's a big IF), this is the meaning ...

The term "Ducky" comes from a word "Ducats." Old England and Europe traded with gold coins called Ducats. When a shopkeeper was asked how business was, he would respond, "Just Ducky!" meaning it was good. So heft is good. Heft is just ducky!!!!!!!

Re: Mighty Metal vs. Plastic

Plastic is not a fave of mine. It retains dust, cracks, and isn't as handlable as metal.

Plus it's too closely related to plastic models, which many of us have fled.

Smile Re: Mighty Metal vs. Plastic

I prefer the canopy to be plastic and the tires to be rubber. The rest in metal is OK with me.

Re: Mighty Metal vs. Plastic

Personally I prefer metal.

I tend to get plastic models where metal is a) impossible to heft or b) simply too darn expensive.

A fine example for that is the B-1B in 1/48.

More metal than plastic, but I'm all for just getting it right.

Re: Mighty Metal vs. Plastic

The more metal the better, I know we pay a premium for "die cast" assuming it is metal. Easy model makes some terrific models but if I wanted a plastic model I would build it. Plastic does have its place in the cockpit and other small intricate pieces but give me metal for the body/wings and a metal stand is great.

Sounds reasonable. Thanks
