Switching Scales to 1/72

With all the new 1/72 scale diecast aircraft promised for 2008 and for the future, I am contemplating unloading most (if not all) of my Matchbox, Model Power, 1/100 Armour Collection, 1/48 Armour Collection, and 1/32 Corgi models. I have completely run out of room for anything new! This won't be easy but my wife will be sooooo happy. I thought my two sons 9 and 5 years old might be interested in this hobby but they aren't unless they can play with them! I guess I have a few months to figure it all out. On the bright side - it looks like 1/72 scale is taking off! I am very excited at what Hobby Master will be bringing to the table as well as others.

Re: Switching Scales to 1/72

I switched to 1/72 a couple of years ago and have saved heaps on freight costs as well as display space, and the detail is usually better than the larger models.

Re: Switching Scales to 1/72

1/72 has always been my primary scale, but I find myself buying other scales as well.. As a matter of fact, my 1/72 purchases have dropped off, while my 1/48 purchases have increased dramatically..

Re: Switching Scales to 1/72

Now that we have C1 and Eagles I find that the finest examples of model building out there are 1/48. The scale is so impressive and prices are down from 7 years ago when I bought my first Armour model @ $90+tax

Now, a nice C1 can be had for $60 or so and that is just hard to pass up. Most of my collection is 1/72 and will remain but the big ones and even GMP and Corgi 32s do set it off. Just gotta be patient and wait for the deals...

Leigh-Mallory and his big wings! Might as well stay on the ground for all the use they are!

Re: Switching Scales to 1/72

Funny, I'm considering just the opposite -- unloading all my 1:72 (except for the heavies) and focusing on less, but larger, scales. For example, maybe my only purchase for most of the next year will be HM's 1:32 Dauntless (I'd love to see what Vegas odds are on me holding to that one!)

I like 1:72 but it tends to all blend together in the display case with 1:48 and larger popping from across the room... and focusing on 1:48 and larger would make it easier for me to be a bit more discriminating in my purchases

In packing for my upcoming move, I've seen far more 1:72 models I wish I had not purchased than larger scales. (Course I probably have a bit more 1:72.) The hurdle is the heavies, I don't have room for those in 1:48

Re: Switching Scales to 1/72

Ah . . . the age-old dilema of scales. I personally am kind of partial to 1:72 due to the fact I like to collect RAF bombers. To add to this, I do have the odd RAF fighter or four in the mix. 1:48 has never been an option, just due to the size of each one. (Although in my modelling days I liked it best!) My display area is extremely limited, so like a lot of museums, most of my collection is usually in storage (and rotation).

But now that I have all of this neatly compartmentalized, that applies only to my military models. I also have a penchant for civil aviation (airliners), and collect a number of the 1:144 ones -- particularly the Bristol Britannia (my fave!). My solution is easy, but if I did buy a house, where would I get money for more diecast??

Re: Switching Scales to 1/72

I stopped caring. If I like it I buy it.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.
