| Re: Great new aviation/armor print by Trudgian That is a very impressive painting. And to think most of the men in both the planes and the tanks were probably in their early to mid 20's. | ||||||||||||||

| Re: Great new aviation/armor print by Trudgian What a magnificent work of art. I have no problems when somebody is praising the professionalism of the German soldier regardless of his political beliefs (Hans Rudel was a hardcore Nazi), what I do have problems with is FALSIFICATION of history not by outright lying, but rather through omission and suppression of crucial info.
Like in many instances in 1943 - 1945 German counter offensive with an aim to recapture the City of Kiev was highly successful in the early stages, until the German juggernaut reached the towns of Zhitomir and Korosten where the exhausted and outgunned troops of the 1st Ukrainian front made a heroic stand. The unsuppressed Soviet artillery fire devastated the German armor, and on 25th of December Soviets launched a midday Christmas offensive of their own throwing depleted German armies past their starting point. LSSAH didn't do too well in that operation, just a couple months later the Waffen SS would suffer a catastrophic defeat trying to breakthrough the Korsun pocket (another operation that started extremely well for the Germans). I'll post not so glamorous B&W pics of the end of the German offensive aimed at re-capturing Kiev when I get home. Regards, Sergey

| Re: Great new aviation/armor print by Trudgian Even if LSSAH failed in their objectives doesn't mean they did not live up to their reputation. Look at the HJ division in Normandy, they got their ass kicked for 2/3 months and were an empty shell come September. However that being said, I bet every British/Canadian/Polish soldier that fought against them would admit their fighting prowess and spirit were top notch. | ||||||||||||||

Yes but fighting from a defense is much easier than being on the offense. And considering the open country envolved it wasn't hard to rack a good score against the Brits/Poles/Canadians. Did the German fight hard and well? Yes, but why is it always the SS that gets the credit? The Army was larger and shouldered more than any SS unit ever did. Its all about the myth and cool guy factor I know. However if the SS was so darn great, the Germans would have won the war. The worship of these guys escapes me and apparently others as well.

Yep - don't understand it either. What they stood for should be despised. Back on topic - the painting is very good.
