| Antiques Roadshow - REAL WWII German Tank Model Caught a rerun of Antiques Roadshow early this morning. It was an episode out of Chicago.
An older gentleman in his late 60s came in with a wooden box about 1.5 feet by 1 foot by 1 foot. He said that it was sent to him when he was four years old by his uncle who was in WWII, serving with Patton in northern France and into Germany after D-Day. This guy's uncle was in charge of securing their stopping area before and after the army moved, so I guess he had a chance to check out a lot of the local stuff. The fellow mentioned that his uncle was involved in the Battle of the Bulge.
Then the guy opens the box and pulls out what his uncle had sent him. It was a model of a Russian T-34 (I believe -76 version) tank. The thing was green and about 1 FOOT long and at least 6 inches wide and tall. Not sure what scale that is, but it was big. The guy said that his uncle told him he got it from a German war-room they discovered. The tank had German writing on it that said something like "For official use only. Misuse will be punished" or something like that. And it looked really accurate.
So basically the model of the Russian T-34 tank was one the Nazis used to do their planning/strategy. At least for me, this pretty much sounds like the pinnacle of tank collecting - an actual 1 foot long German model from 1944/1945 that they used to strategize against the Russians. And if I remember right, the appraiser gave a value of $1,000 to $1,500 dollars since nothing like this had ever been seen.
If anybody can get a picture or video of the tank in this episode, that would be groovy. I've still got a dial-up modem and it would take me days to download.
Hmmmm . . . wonder if it will come up on EBAY? |
