Talking Re: Quiz, Can you name this plane

I would put money on it being a SAAB aircraft. Good thing this is a gambling free web site but I may ask the goods to add a heading " How Long till you get that model you ordered?"

Re: Quiz, Can you name this plane

I believe I may have seen the British ID pictures you referred to some time ago. However my first real aircraft collectible was a Cruver TBF and I eventually bought or was given between 90-100 of these models which, of course, were my first love---at least where this hobby is concerned. I also have a old U.S. WWII spotter's guide with many of those not so accurate ID-style pictures but this, like most of my surviving Cruver models , is in pretty bad shape. Oh well. Life goes on.

Thought I would add some pictures of the recognition material I was talking about. Really do like the Cruver ID models too and had a collection of over 200 of the gems. Only problem with Cruvers is when tempertures get high, because it tends to help them breakdown. Living down south really does not help with this either, all it would take is an extended power outage to turn a nice collection into a not so nice collection. They also have a tendancy to be dust magnets. Still have a few nice ones to include CR-42. Piper Grasshopper, Westland Whirlwind, Emily, Catalina, and a Hampden. Nice little collection of some of the harder ones to find.

I did not put in order in for the plastic kit picture. It looks to be produced by small Polish manufacturer. Few years back (Quite a few years back) I did take a hack at a couple of kits out of Poland. Models were of a Blackburn Skua and a Breda Ba.88 in 1/48th scale. Kits were resin with white metal parts, and it was an extremely challenging project. Came out with nice looking models, but talk about the man hours. Nope, pretty much sticking to die cast now.

My first impression is that its one of the French Amiot bombers---the 351 series I believe. Some of these had twin tail fins, others had a single fin.

Pictured is kind of small, any chance of posting a larger shot (In this case size does matter), I would like better look at the engines to make firm call, but would have to say on what is available plane would be the Amiot 353 which was powered by two 1030 hp Rolls-Royce Merlin III 12 cylinder engines. Really need larger shot to make definitive call. Nose, main wing and tail do have Amiot 350 series look to them.

Re: Quiz, Can you name this plane

On further reflection plane engine may better support Amiot 370.

Yep have to go with Amiot 370 powered by two 850 hp Hispano-Suiza 12 cylinder engines. Exhaust stacks where helpful clue.

Re: Quiz, Can you name this plane

William Winters in his book WAR PLANES of all Nations (Copyright 1943) had some nice things to say on the Amiot series of aircraft and provided some more information on the Amiot 370.
" Possibly the best-looking bomber ever designed is France's exquisitely streamlined Amiot 350 or 351, a twin-engined midwing with projectile-like body and graceful wings. Its extraordinary abilit to fly far and fast with a heavy load was demostrated on February 28, 1938, when a special long-range verson known ast the 370 set four international records with a single flight. With a load of 4,400 pounds, pilot Rossi and Vigroux flew 1,242 milse over an observed course between Meknes and Oran, Nothe Africa, at and average speed of 273 m.p.h."

If you can ever find a copy of this old book snatch it up. It might be considered old an out dated, but definitely gives a good view of aviation history during that period of time.

Re: Quiz, Can you name this plane

Despite their admirable streamlining and relatively high performance levels the French managed to produce barely 80-90 of its Amiot 351 and 353 light bombers before they were overrun by the Germans in 1940. With only a handful attaining operational status and few crews trained to use them the Amiots saw little action. The Germans reportedly used a few of these planes as light transports, but that seems to be the extent of their wartime service. A sad end for a promising design.
