Re: Quiz, Can you name this plane

Well time to put a name to the Italian unbrace sesqui plane, and the second trainer I posted a few days back.
Italian aircraft is a Jona 6-S and the trainer is a Fleetwomgs XBT-12.

It seems to me that quizzes of this sort should stay away from planes and manufacturers that are as remote from the mainstream as these two. I'm familiar with a lot of aircraft and , when in doubt, can scan through my library or go on the web. But how does one look for a Jona or Fleetwomgs ( Fleetwings? ) if these don't even show up in broad category searches? By the way, I wonder why we have focused so heavily on WWII? Unless I missed them, there were no jets or WWI planes. Perhaps this is discouraging the participation of other members. I see we have many views on this thread but only a few players.

Just my opinion. Perhaps it's because most of the a/c types might be esoteric and somewhat bland in nature (though I'll admit I've discovered and learned more obscure a/c types than ever thanks to this forum) and doesn't quite spark any interests even the most avid aeronuts among us on this forum...I dunno? To each his own.

Found these aircraft in 1940s additions of bound annual Air News year book. I did find a couple of sites on line with Fleetwing, but only one for the Italian Jona. I also have a collection of Aeroplane publications starting off 13 March 1941 thru 10 July 1948 that I use for reference material. In addition to these I have a complete set of the United States joint services Recognition Journals with also a collection of the British version of their joint services Aircraft Recognition journals (Some of these continued to 1955). This thread is open to anyone who wants to tack a plane on to try and stump the aviation enthusiasts on this forum. Shoot thread title is "Can you name this plane", does not say just WWII. Civilian aircraft could really provide a challenge.

Re: Quiz, Can you name this plane

Epapazian,
While I certainly understand where you are coming from, as I have had NO shot whatsoever at figuring out what these planes are, I'm going to disagree with you on your post.
If posters stuck to more "mainstream" aircraft then there wouldn't be any challenge at all. I'm fairly knowledgable about aircraft, but compared to the average person on this forum I'm a complete idiot. I say keep the weird and obscure planes coming. If nothing else, I enjoy watching the pictures posted.
Its a very entertaining thread, even if it is completely frustarting trying to guess what these birds are.

Anything for a weird life.

Perhaps I should have chosen a different word than mainstream. What I meant was manufacturers whose planes--even including those that saw little service--are reasonably well known. Under this definition, any French aircraft made by Potez, Amiot, Dewoitine, Bloch, etc. would qualify, because such manufacturers will usually pop up in a screening of French aircraft makers either on the Internet or in books, magazines, etc. about the subject. So I don't mean to imply that only the most famous planes should be included. But if we get too obscure, the quiz is turned into a tedious research project that few of us will be willing to attempt.

Re: Quiz, Can you name this plane

The intent of this thread was to put out some odd ball planes for members to take a hack at. At no time did I ever intend for anyone to take it so seriously. It basically is supposed to be a case of stump the dummy. I have to admit Planenutsfrog has stumped me (Yep, in this case I am the dummy) on the last plane he has posted. All I can hope for is that he leaves it out for a few more days to mull over (Clue would be nice too). Thread is open for any member to put up a plane to take a shot at stumping us and there is nothing saying planes put up have to be of any set period (Just make them hard).

Epapazian,
Hey there.

Oh, yeah, absolutely. That is exactly how I took your post. I didn't think you were referring to, say P-51's or anything like that. However, the A36 probably would fall into the obscure catagory and that would be such an easy pick for the folks on this forum. Plus, most of us would already have any picture posted of anything closer to the "mainstream."

As I said earlier, you made some good points, but I've seen two or three threads like this come and go very quickly when folks ran out of A36's (or whatever) and didn't take the next step of going for the [i]REALLY[i] obscure. This thread seems to have gone that way and seems to have a little more life in it than other similiar threads like it.

I also understand that by making that kind of request, I'm completely excsuing myself from every having a chance at answering the question of what is this bird, but I'm seeing many very nice photos of things I never knew existed. I'll personally settle for just being entertained while the real aviation brains go at it.

I didn't mean to come across negatively about your post and I apologize if it read that way.

*** EDIT ***

Epapazian,
However, you are correct tht by going to far, that might also burn the thread out. So far, it doesn't seem to have crossed that line and I'm willing to let it ride. If I'm wrong, then please, lets tone it down as this is a very fun thread.

Cool Re: Quiz, Can you name this plane

At last a plane Cruver Collecter doesn't know !

So, this quiz-can-you-name-plane-image78.jpg is the CAO 600.

It was a 3 seats carrier-borne scout-torpedo-bomber designed in the late 30s, to operate from the carriers Joffre and Painlevé (never completed due to the German invasion...).

The Dewoitine D 750 was also designed to answer the same requirement, the most impressive feature of wich was certainly the favored twin configuration.

Those are really slick looking aircraft. Some times you get lucky and one of the smaller companies will put something like this out as a resin kit. The canopies on these two aircraft would be a bear to paint, but would offer a chance for some nice detailing.
