Meet a Flying Tiger today

Was dragged to Hobby Lobby with the wife today, and as we were checking out I met a Flying Tiger. He was next in line with three framed pictures of a P-40 under repairs, its tail on the back of a truck. It had several pilots signatures in pencil of all things.
I asked where he got the autographs and he said from the last reunion, then added there were only 23 or 24( I forget as I was just happy to meet him ) pilots left as he pointed to his signature. The wife was out the door by this time and he had to ring up the order for framing. So I left happy to shake his hand, and I didn't bother to ask his name. I didn't want to look stupid for not making out his handwriting. Its nice to know there is a TIger in and around the Ft. Benning, GA area.

Re: Met a Flying Tiger today

Cool! I met a USS Arizona survivor at the grocery store the other day. History still walks among us and it is always nice to meet and thank these men first hand.

BTW, pencil is often used because it won't fade like ink. I thought it was crazy the first time I saw it since I thought of the damage an eraser could do but I guess most collectors don't plan on letting my 3 year old anywhere near the prints.

My great uncle lives in that neck of the woods
I bet he knows who he is. I will drop a line some time this week to see if he know who he is.

No I'm cool with not knowing. I didn't want to bother the guy and I think seeing how I knew what the Flying Tigers were, was enough for him. I'm sure the last thing on his mind was BSing with me in Hobby Lobby. If noone ever believed me, I know what happened and who I met. Thats good enough for me.
Now meeting CSM. Plumley from "We were Soldiers" dring an IOBC class graduation, that was different. Everyone and their brother knew who he was. Funny thing is, he is much shorter than I thought and was real easy going. Especially when my son got his autograph, he actually stopped to talk with him more so than others. The boy was wearing his mini ACUs as he is the Bn's Honorary 1SG, and I think it impressed the CSM.
Still I think its a respect thing, he didn't offer and I didn't push. But we both know what happened.

That’s a rare treat, Shawn. At the rate our heros are passing away, encounters are becoming fewer and farther between.

It is never too late to be what you might have been.
