Question LCDR now CAPT Scott Speicher - CIA FOI document

Last edited by Armour Addict : 09-29-2007 at 07:18 AM. Reason: Attachments disappeared...
I guess all of you remember Michael Scott Speicher, the Hornet pilot who got shot down on the first night of Desert Storm.

Attached you'll find the Intelligence Community Assessment dated march 2001 (spearheaded by the CIA) of his case.

The document is unclassified through FOI hence incomplete...

Makes one wonder what really happened to that poor guy.

Not that I read of. The most "recent" is this one:

Search for FSU MIA in Iraq continues
Top Iraqi officials, including Saddam Hussein, questioned about status of FSU alumnus

When the United States and coalition forces attacked Iraq during the first Persian Gulf War, an FSU graduate was among those who led the charge.
That graduate also became the war's first coalition casualty, at least temporarily.
On Jan. 17, 1991, U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Michael Scott Speicher was downed by hostile fire 100 miles west of Baghdad while flying his FA-18 during the first night of coalition bombing.
Then Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney told reporters that day the pilot was dead, later identifying Speicher by name. Speicher was then designated as missing in action the day after being shot down.
On May 22, 1991 the secretary of the navy changed Speicher's designation to "killed in action/body not recovered" after he found that "no credible evidence" existed to suggest that Speicher had survived the crash.
Following a review of the evidence that had surfaced throughout the decade, the secretary of the navy changed Speicher's status to MIA in January 2001. In October 2003 his status was changed again to missing-captured.
Speicher is the only serviceman to have his status changed in such a way. His rank has also recently been raised to captain.
Speicher, who went by Scott, was born in Kansas City, Mo. and then went to Nathan Bedford Forrest High School in Jacksonville, Fla. He attended FSU in the late 1970s, and graduated in 1980 with a 3.0 GPA and a bachelor's degree in business management.
It was at FSU that Speicher met his wife, Joanne. The couple had two children together. According to the Virginia Pilot, Joanne has since remarried to a close friend and fellow naval aviator of Speicher's.
In July 1991, then-FSU President Bernard Sliger announced that a new tennis complex would be named after Speicher. Construction on the complex began in October 1992 and the complex was completed in September 1993.
Following the recent war in Iraq, U.S. officials have now been able to find more answers to what may have happened to Speicher following his apparent capture.
"The U.S. government continues to receive intelligence and other information regarding Capt. Speicher's status," said Lt. Cmdr. Alvin Plexico, a Navy spokesman.
Plexico said that over 50 locations in Iraq, each related to the Speicher investigation, have been investigated. These sites include prisons, hospitals, security archives, residences and the original crash site of his aircraft.
The search has yielded some physical evidence to support the belief Speicher survived long after his 1991 crash.
In April 2003, Speicher's initials were discovered in a prison cell at Hakmiyah, Iraq. Speicher's name was also found on a document in Iraq, dated January 2003, that had the names of prisoners being held in the country.
Plexico said that the Navy's efforts have led to the capture of over 1,000 documents relating to Speicher from Iraqi intelligence and security services.
Several high-ranking Iraqi officials have also been interrogated as part of the investigation, Plexico said.
"All detained Iraqi officials, including Saddam Hussein, have been interrogated about Capt. Speicher, and hundreds of other lower-level Iraqi officials, civilians, defectors and refugees have been and are still being questioned," Plexico said.
The Navy claims the search will continue to seek out new leads as the situation in Iraq continues to change.
"The Navy is dedicated to resolving the Capt. Speicher case and will continue to review and analyze all available information," Plexico said.
FSU officials, meanwhile, said they hope for the best.
"The University doesn't take a position on efforts to find out his status, other than to hope that everything turns out for the best for Scott, his family and everyone involved," FSU spokesman David Cox said.

Pretty strange!

I did not delete them. But I had some trouble uploading them. "Internal Server Error 500" or something. Maybe the server log will show more.

Problem was that I wasn't able to upload all six files in one batch. Had to upload the last 2 seperately.
On the other hand, maybe it was the CIA, NSA or some other alphabet soup organisation.
