Well, lets get back to the subject, shall we?

I got my own thoughs about what was said before but they have nothing to do with this thread.

Anyways while visiting Munich the Deutsches Museum is a must see!

http://www.deutsches-museum.de/en/ex...r/aeronautics/

The got i.e. an Ju-52, F-104, Me-262, Bf 109E etc.

There is also a subsidary of the museum called "Flugwerft" with even more impressibe stuff such as the Eurofighter Prototype, the X-31, an F-4, couple MiGs and a DC-3!

http://www.deutsches-museum.de/en/fl...t/collections/

They even got a museum-store with some FM/A models specially commisioned for the museum at hilarious (up to 50% over normal) prices. So if you want them, buy elsewhere.

Check these for Armour Models (I took the info from the german distributors site):

I liked this one Armour Addict. Do they allow anyone to sit in the cockpit?

Its been at least 5 years since I have been in the museum.

If memory serves me right you are not allowed to sit in it.

Re: Model stores in Europe.

Thanks AA, and thanks for posting the site. I love museums where you can touch and sit in and feel the hardware. It's too bad that there are fewer and fewer places where this is permitted. I guess that the planes are so old and so expensive to restore that the authorities have to keep touching to a minimum.

When I was a kid we used to sneak into the T.A. yard next door and play with all the 25 Pounders which littered the base. I guess that we were privillaged.

No prob...

Its the same for me, and this museum is really awesome! You can try out some stuff but right, fixing everything that broke off is way to costly. But I really liked the Me 262 the last time I was there.

Check my initial post for another link. This place is even better!

Cool, I don't have any Luftwaffe around my hometown...

I don't think that I ever saw a 262 in the flesh. I did see most of the stuff which they have in the Imperial War Museum in London, including the " Peoples' Jet Fighter" which looked very odd indeed.

I'll check out your earlier posting later.

Cheers,

Re: Model stores in Europe.

Hi MB,

I can understand why you want to go there. If I was in the vicinity, I doubt if I could stay away from the site ( but I've already revealed my darkest intent! ) and I would be more than a little curious to see the view, and find out why those who visited Hitler at home described the location in such admiring prose.

Also, for those of us who crossed Europe with Easy ( at least six times, in my case ) it would be a thrill to stand where those guys stood at the end of a long, terrible journey.

All the best. Keep us posted!

Dear cardinal,

I really didn't intend my little posting to be 'inflammatory' ( except in ref. to Hitler's cremation...let's hope he wasn't quite dead when they torched him! ). I really was expressing my queeziness and trepidation at the thought of what the future may bring.

When all the guys who fought in the war are gone, and the post-war baby-boomer generation has passed on too, there will be a major reassessment of Hitler and his cronies as more and more revisionist historians try to place Hitler in the same position as Napoleon now occupies. It dosn't take much imagination to foresee that the contempt that we feel for the nazis may mellow into something close to admiration for all sorts of reasons.

My position has always been to stomp hard on any sign of sneaking admiration for Nazi Germany. I realise that there is a basic flaw and contradiction in what I'm saying because, like all of you, I can, and do, collect the miniature representations of the artifacts of that regime's army's hardware. I don't feel that it is wrong or politically incorrect to admire the technology of that era. The literature, movies, documentaries, ephemera, etc. are all fascinating, and add to the knowledge of the era. For a baby-boomer like me, who was brought up in a country where the war cast a long shadow, all this is a vital part of my life.

At the same time, I can worry about the future because in Europe we can see signs of a resurgent extreme right. I guess that if people are going to visit the places where momentous events took place ( and they will ) and which shaped the world in which we live, my hope would be that all the folk who are aware of the facts insist that the 'guides' tell it like it is.

We are all military historians, to a greater or lesser degree, and I feel that it is incumbent on us to also tell it like it is.

Believe me, Cardi, there is nothing controversial in this.

Now this is far more articulate and even has a dash of objectivity thrown in for flavour!

Seriously MoMo, I do understand your view as well as your concerns, I just feel that history and places of historical interest, no matter how unpalatable to some, should never be ignored, 'swept under the carpet', destroyed or made unavailable to both this and future generations .

Essentially I concur fully with the folowing statement that you made, namely "We are all military historians, to a greater or lesser degree, and I feel that it is incumbent on us to also tell it like it is."

Re: Model stores in Europe.

That museum in Munich looks awesome. The hobby shops look promising, too. I really want one of those Limited Luftwaffe F-4's from the FM. Thanks.

Good. So we are in agreement. Well, that's us all singing from the same hymnsheet!

Heck my 7 yr old can beat that. Not only can he see / play on the tanks here on the Post Museum. Once a month I can take him out to the range where he gets to pull the trigger on the M4 Carbine, M249 SAW, M240 MG, M24 Sniper Rifle, and the coax to the Bradley. All we have left to shoot are the 25mm on the Bradley, Mk19 40mm grenade launcher and M2 .50 cal HMG. Oh and he has jumped the 34 foot mock jump tower at the Airborne school 14 times, and climbed all over the M1A1 Abrams.
