Re: How did you get started?

I remember the second time I seen an 1/18th scale model. The poor thing was actually being played with by this little boy in our neighborhood. It was at that point I had to at least save the ones I could from the final exit "that being the toy box". It was a P40 I don't know which one though it impressed me to see how large it was in comparison to the child. Walmart on any given day has these models but I do have restraint with regards to which one I get and how many of a particular type. I don't know if that will be the case with the F-4's forth comming. Nothing like echlon formations "Right"? As to completeing my collection I don't think it's possible!!!! Alph

Re: How did you get started?

I have always loved airplanes and built various models over the past 30 years, though my last plastic-kit model I built was in 1992. Had all of them hanging in my den though before I got remarried and moved. Had a total of 78 hanging from my ceiling at that time (now 147 hanging from the ceiling and soooo many on shelves and in their boxes in the closet).. Then after I got remarried in July, 2005, while I am a seller on ebay (Powerseller since 1999) I am a buyer as well. in Octber, 2005 I was browsing ebay and found a Dragon FW-109D with the Red & White stripes underneeth. This has been a favorite of mine but never built the model....so that was the start (and several thousand dollars+ since). I only have 1/72 scale. Been hooked ever since! I have only 200 diecasts from Corgi, Dragon, GA, HM and IXO. Always had a interest in Armour too, though never built one. Now I have close to 130 of the little buggers in 1/72 scale. Thanks again Dragon!

Re: How did you get started?

For me, it started as a child. I would love to spend hours building and painting plastic models, but only WWII-era warplanes. No jets for me back then (funny how things change as now I prefer modern a/c to the WWII birds).

As an adult, it started with the carved mahogany warbird models until I stumbled across a few CDC/Armour 1/48s at a local hobby shop back in the mid 1990s. I tried to resist, but went back and bought the VF-111 Phantom. That was the one that started the diecast bug for me.

I pretty much have stayed with the 1/48 scale, but have gotten into the 1/72s due to the Century Wings Tomcats which are really well done, IMO.

No stigma though, other than my wife referring to my planes as my "toys". Yeah, yeah, whatever...

I was already an avid 1/18 and 1/24 diecast race car collector, so I was used to it by then.

Tone,
That picture is awesome! When was it taken and what is the plane, if I may ask?

Anything for a weird life.

Re: How did you get started?

About 5 years ago, I bought a Matchbox Corsair and P-38 at Toys R Us. They were so cool I had to have the rest of the series. Bought the rest over a two week period. I then discovered The Flying Mule and the original forum and that was it. I am creeping up on 100 models and I have no intention of slowing down!

Re: How did you get started?

I've always loved airplanes (especially fighters) and as a kid I wanted detailed, realistic "toy" airplanes, but in the 1970s they just didn't exist, as far as I could tell (apart from a few Corgi and Dinky diecast planes, which I never got). So I built Snap-Tite models instead, but because I wasn't really into modelling -- I wanted to fly the airplanes around the room, not paint and glue tiny pieces -- the models always looked crappy. I was an unsatisfied child.

Twenty years later, in the late '90s, I stumbled across CDC Armour's 1:100 scale diecast airplanes in a very fine toy store in San Diego. These were what I'd been looking for! After FM bought out CDC and stopped producing the 1:100 line, I switched to 1:72 scale Corgi and Dragon, and haven't looked back. It's never too late to have a happy childhood!

Nrrrm! Whoosh! Rat-tat-tat!

Re: How did you get started?

Lorraine says its down to "obsessive compulsive behavior disorder" so its official gentlemen we need help.

She says, good news its treatable.

She suggested that firstly that we be persuaded to sell a couple of planes and we would see that nothing bad would happen thereof.
I said, good idea then we could use the money to buy a new model.
I then had a long discussion with her that I will spare you all the details of.

I can report that I think I won the discussion. I would like to have reported that she now collects diecast but no such luck.

However she did agree that it was better than gambling wife beating womanizing and taking drugs. (she did recommend a course of drugs to treat the more compulsive amongst us and I think she meant ME)!

BTW by the age 14 I had over 200 plastic kits of aeroplanes in my bedroom. I now have around 200 diecast aeroplanes, I am not sure of exactly how many and I dont think I want to know.

God Bless America.

Jim, I hate to tell you this but your better half, Lorraine, only lets you think that you won the debate. Deep down, in the realm of your subconscious, you and the rest of us know that she's 100% correct about the OCD nature of collecting and that the severity of the 'disorder' is the only real yardstick to distinguish those who have a real problem from those who don't (naturally we fall in the "those that don't" category ).
