I guess you could call me a completeist--I want one model of every type of a/c that flew combat in WWII.
Will I ever complete this collection? Probably not, but I guess I will continue trying until the day I
pass on. All depends on what the manufacturers release and how soon. (Hint to manufactureres:
how about some Soviet and Italian a/c, especially in 1/48)

Re: Completists -- Bless 'em

I was that way with my 1/35th scale armor. I wanted one version of every major ( light, medium, heavy) tank used in WW2. Then I scaled back to Allied armor, then finally US WW2 with special attention to Sherman variants.
This 1/72nd scale WW2 Allied Aircraft only thing is getting out of hand. Now there are Skyraiders coming.... Whats a guy to do??

Re: Completists -- Bless 'em

Well Ok I admit it although it will come as no surprise to many good folks on this forum, I have most of the P40s on offer.

I am trying to examine my latest P40 a GMP Texas Longhorn, (many thanks Mustangdriver you are a star).

At the moment Lorraine is blissfully unaware that this beauty has arrived and I intend to keep it that way.

Now if she would just go away for long enough I could have a good look at it.

When I get my new cabinet it will take pride of place with my Carousel models and I shall of course say that I bought it ages ago dear, its been up in the loft dont you remember?

Tell her the truth Jim . The GMP P40 is so good that you'll want to share every detail with her, from the engine compartment to the cockpit. Not just that, but there is absolutely no way that you'll get away with it as you'll be asked why this objet d'art, the centerpiece of your collection, is only now being displayed - you'll be up the creek without a paddle my friend, so 'fess up and take your punishment like a Yorkshireman .

Re: Completists -- Bless 'em

I think we need Tricatus to weigh in on this one

I had fleeting dreams of being a completist, but then I decided that having a little bit of everything was more fun -- and practical!

Once again, we are of one mind, Pappy. Same for me. All eras, all scales, a bit of everything. It really is fun...

The problem with a little bit of everything is you end up with a lot of a little, am I making any sense whatsoever?

Not really. I f you are a military aviation enthusiast at large, specializing in one area makes no sense. I like all airplanes, from all eras (some more than others, for sure, but I like them all). So a little bit of everything (if 200+ models counts as "a little bit") is in fact a lot of a lot. An era not being represented in my collection (in whatever scale, even if it's only one model) would make it extremely unsatisfying to me. In fact, I'm a bit frustrated by the lack of WW I models out there (it's getting better, slowly). And I would like to see more models from the WW II to Vietnam era.

Seems to me a lot of the categories listed in this thread are very arbitrary. Nothing wrong with that, people have their own interests and that's their choice. But I don't see how I could arbitrarily set boundaries for myself when it comes to military aviation (I'll admit I do not collect civilian planes, in general).

FVD, I have a large collection of planes now but all are tail draggers. I have never got into Jets, I have a Meteor and 262 but thats all.

There is something about the old prop driven stuff that appeals to me. I think because I was trained as an engineer and like things mechanical rather than all this computor and electronic wizardry, the old technology is more my bag. I like the craftsmanship in making these old girls and the skills needed, many of these skills would now be lost but for the warbird owners keeping them alive.
I can appreciate some of the jets say post war era and I enjoy having my ears blown apart by them and all the modern planes at airshows but my heart is firmly in the old heavy metal gear and always will be.

When I have all the WW2 stuff I shall then start on WW1 and I hope there will be more interwar planes being made by some one in the future as that is a rich hunting ground for subjects.

Its a case of each to their own and go with what you like.

I guess I am just an old petrol head.

God Bless America.
