Re: The Very Best Yet Made

Seems like we are getting some repeats now and this is good. Can a poll be added that includes several of the top choices so far?

Like to see it....seems like the Dora and GMP P-40 are in a close race w/ the Swordfish.

I have two C1 Doras, two GMP P-40s, and one Corgi Swordfish. They are all wonderfull models, examplars of what diecast models can and should be like.

However, even though I still think 1/35 is a weird scale for aircraft, the GMP P-40s are definitely one step above the others. I wasn't too convinced until I actually got one (e-bay), but that sure made a believer out of me. You have to see them to believe it, the pictures don't do them justice (even though they already look good on them). The ultimate in diecast aircraft. Makes you want more...

Post Re: The Very Best Yet Made

There is a risk in discussions of this nature to forget the larger planes. For example, Corgi's B-17G or B-24J and even the HE-111, when detailed correctly, are very superior diecasts. Nevertheless, I have always regarded Dragon's initial Pearl Harbor "Zeros" , even without pilot figures, as the best I have seen. Now, however, newer entries, such as Carousel's FW-190D, Hobby Master's "Avenger" and good old Corgi's "Swordfish" and "Gladiator" rank the highest. If I had to pick one, I would opt for Carousel's "Dora".

I do agree Epapazian I have three He111s ( BoB, Doodlebug & the S&S Blitz ) all beautifully finished, I also have the Nine o Nine B17 which is an excellent example of how good diecast aircraft can be.

FVD, why just you go ahead and send me one of yours so I can see for myself?

Arghh.. Why do you have to do that? Now I have to see it. A GMP P-40 is added to the list.

Leigh-Mallory and his big wings! Might as well stay on the ground for all the use they are!

Parsig9, spoil yourself and buy one as the cockpit and engine compartment detail must be seen to be believed - overall fit and finish is also excellent .

Re: The Very Best Yet Made

Which one is the best? Texas?

Right now, only Texas and Exterminator are available on e-bay for really cheap (between $50 and $80). Of the two, I recommend Texas mostly because the tail wheel on it is castored the "correct way," meaning it is in the right position for a P-40 moving forward, as opposed to being pushed (or havig been pushed) backwards as on Exterminator. I corrected that myself, but it did take some cutting and super-glueing. It's not technically incorrect, but it just looked weird to me.

I suppose Exterminator has a bit more of a "classic" P-40 look with the shark mouth...

Buy one. You can get really good prices on e-bay (the equivalent of 2 or 3 1/72 WW II fighters) and you won't regret it, I promise. These things are magnificent.

Re: The Very Best Yet Made

Ok ok, I have the GMP Missouri Armada and think it's nice but nothing like the ravings I'm hearing about this thing.

Thanks for the input FVD and I'm on the pursuit. Texas it is.

I hear you on their P-51. It's very, very nice (I have Cripes-A-Mighty) but it does not compare to their P-40s.

Corgi's Snafu Snatchers Catalina.

Larz

I have that one as well as the Black Cat version. Love them both! Also love my Corgi HE-122 with the Doodlebug, Sweet!
