Re: Pick your poison with a twist

Good choice, the P47 Thunderbolt is the plane that destroyed the Luftwaffe on the Westen Front. Can never understand why this aircraft always ends up in the shadow of the P51.

‘Cause the Mustang was svelte, sexy and supple. The P-47 was bulbous and beastly – a real battleaxe. Looks win nearly every time.

That’s not to belittle the Thunderbolt. She was a real warrior and deserves every accolade. But if the Mustang was the Marilyn Monroe of warbirds, the P-47 was burly Aunt Bertha down the street.

With that short definition, wouldn't Mae West be better?? Some like women with "alittle" meat on them, I stress alittle. Not everyone likes Twiggy.

Gotta point there, Shawn. No question, I like my warbirds just right – not too thin, not too, eh ... meaty. Love ‘dem curves, too. The P-51D wins hands down.

Personally, I prefer coke bottles to milk bottles. Nothing against Jugs, though.

Of course they both have their advantages and disadvantages....the skinny one's easier to handle, but the meatier one can be fun in other ways. Oh wait, are we talking about women or planes.

[The Arrow I'm interested in has the faired wing cannon. Don't have a photo of it but I love the platform.

This is for you Ara1 - a Do335B2 (sorry it's only a model)

Thanks Black 6! She's the one.

The Do 335 was to aircraft what actress Heather Angel was to the movies of the 1930's: striking and worthy of study.

Re: Pick your poison with a twist

Dare I say its because the Spit and Stang were better in a dogfight? But having said that the P47 was brilliant plane .
.

Better in a Dog fight . The Luftwaffe had held the Western Front , against the RAF Spitfires with only JG2 and JG26.

When the Thunderbolts turned up, the Luftwaffe was at the top of its game, with a kill ratio of 4:1 in its favour.

By the time the MustangS turned up, the Thunderbolts had reduced the Luftwaffe to a bunch of novices led by the few remaining experts.

The Mustang had to take over from the Thunderbolts, because the Luftwaffe had been shot out of the sky and was trying to hide beyond the Thunderbolt range.

Aggressively flown Thunderbolts were what killed the Luftwaffe. Thunderbolts ruled the skies in WW2

As much as I'd hate to admit it DC, you're probably right . The Thunderbolt is definitely a 'meaner' looking aircraft than the Mustang and was undoubtedly the equivalent of a "battleaxe" but you must admit that the Mustang's design (like the Spitfire) is far more graceful .

Re: Pick your poison with a twist

Until joining this forum, I had not really thought too much about the Jug vs the 'Stang, figured the P51 was the better aircraft. It was certainly needed with it's range and all, and was better in some ways, but I have even more respect for the Jug now than before.
