Re: Pick your poison with a twist

My gut is screaming P-47 Thunderbolt, too, like many others, but just for something different, I'll go with a Focke-Wulf Ta-152 with as many bullets as you can load in it! Achtung, Baby!

Re: Pick your poison with a twist

Good choice, the P47 Thunderbolt is the plane that destroyed the Luftwaffe on the Westen Front. Can never understand why this aircraft always ends up in the shadow of the P51 and the Spitfire.

Dare I say its because the Spit and Stang were better in a dogfight? But having said that the P47 was brilliant plane .

No P40s here I see , how about reading the history of the P40 in the desert and see how it knocked down those Me 109s

Dont get too carried away with the Ta 152, I have a question, How many aircraft did it destroy in combat?
Yes it was a very good high altitude plane but I would not have liked to follow a P47 in a dive in one, the wing design was unproven under the high stresses of pulling out from such a dive. The P47 could take enormous stress on its wing and not have a problem (unlike the Spit or Mustang, many reported cases of bent wings after a fierce pull up).
BTW its rate of roll left something to be desired.
If we are talking above 40,000 feet then OK I agree because its the only game in town.

152 was a bit of an unknown quantity, although it sure looked good on paper. I think its safer to go with the 190D , however I think I will stick with the 262. Well if things got tough you could just press the go button and nobody could catch you.

I shall now go and hide in my trench.

God Bless America.

For each war my pick would be :

WWI : Fokker DVII

WWII : War in Europe : P-51D Mustang
WWII : War in the Pacific : F4U-1D Corsair

Korean War : F-86F Sabre

Vietnam War : F4 Phantom

Gulf War I : F-15 Eagle & F-14 Tomcat

Gulf War II : F-14D Tomcat & A-10 Thunderbolt II

Re: Pick your poison with a twist

For whatever reason, possibly unfathomable, I've always had a soft spot for both the FW190 (all variants) and that noble workhorse the Hawker Hurricane .

When playing flight sims like IL-2 I tend to get best results when using the Bf109G - go figure ... )

Pick a plane any plane ( WW 1 to the present )!! All you get is plane of choice, visual ID, and guns. Its just man, machine, and skill. Breaking it down "Old School", dogfighting W.W.1 / 2, Korea style. With all the techno gee whiz stuff out of the way, I'd like to see what the plane of choice is now.
- Shawn
WW 1 Um whatever Rickenbaker flew
- Shawn

That would be the Spad XIII. Historians usually pick the Fokker D VII, which was an excellent plane, but the Spad was faster by around 19 mph if my memory serves, which would be an important factor.

Re: Pick your poison with a twist

A great way to gauge the passion of forum members; here goes.

WW 1 SE 5
WW 2 P-47 (Europe) even though I'm a Spitfire addict I'd feel safer in a Jug!
WW 2 P-51B (Pacific)

Korea F-86 with 4 X 20MM cannon

Vietnam F-4E

1975 to present day F-15E

Thank yee Black 6!

The Arrow I'm interested in has the faired wing cannon. Don't have a photo of it but I love the platform.

Re: Pick your poison with a twist

For modern day, I'd have to pick a F-15C. For 'back in the day', I'd chose a Zeppelin. But not one of those lead ones. They're no good at all.
