Best Active Service Dogfighter

In your opinion, what is the best dogfighter, currently in service, in the world? Assume all aircraft are flown by pilots of equal skill AND because of ECM measures implemented by both sides, BVR weapons will be ineffective. This is a WVR scenario only.

I'll go with the Su-27/30/33/35.

Now, do you mean that with or without High-Angle-Off -Boresight missile capability, coupled with a Helmet-Mounted sight/display of some kind? Or "guns/traditional heaters only"? Big difference in assessment...

Let's go with High-Angle-Off -Boresight missile capability, coupled with a Helmet-Mounted sight/display. BTW, this isn't meant to be a debate-- just curious what folk's opinions are.

Re: Best Active Service Dogfighter

Well, in that case I'll go for the Eurofighter "Typhoon"...

1) The conventional HOTAS-concept enhanced with a direct voice input system to allow the pilot to perform mode selection and data entry procedures. (Lock bandit 3 o'clock?)

2) The Eurofighter on a 'Case White' conversion training sortie was able to out-manoeuvre the attacking aircraft (2 F-15E) and "shoot them down" (i.e., achieve radar lock for a long enough period of time to accurately launch missiles, had this been real combat).

3) Passive infrared target detection and tracking (air-to-air and air-to-surface) is provided by PIRATE (Passive Infra-Red Airborne Track Equipment)

4) Canards, lightweight construction (>70% carbon fibre composites) and the inherently unstable design with a quadruplex digital control system providing artificial stability, allow superior agility both at supersonic speed and at very low speed.

Thanks to wiki BTW...

Re: Best Active Service Dogfighter

I'll stay clear of that one. Even Erich Hartmann said he never got into a dogfight if he could avoid it... A wise man (as his kill tally would seem to indicate).

Galland himself said, have the height go straight down through the enemy guns blazing and keep going dont stop and mess with Mustangs.

Good advice for the mostly rookie pilots he had to lead at that stage of the war.

I understand, but again, I didn't intend to start up a "my plane's better than your plane" type of debate/argument. I'm just interested in folks opinions.
