Corgi B-25 stand may be used for GMP

I'm in the midst of a major Hangar overhaul -- moved offices to a new, bigger space; bought some cabinets, etc. And now I'm busy moving, dusting, rearranging models/space to fit as much as my collection on display without going overboard -- which is a very fine line, I think. (Could it be possible -- do I have too many planes, as my wife thinks? Nah....)

Anyways, I bought an Ikea Detolf cabinet with the idea of fitting my larger scale birds in there -- which means a few GMP models. Seeing as they don't have stands, I got creative with a Corgi B-25 stand and it works quite well -- just thought I'd share if you haven't tried it, and have been wanting an in-flight display option for your GMPs... It's quite stable, as the rubber grommet thing-a-bobs on the top of the stand have enough friction to hold the heavy Old Crow in place. Naturally you wouldn't want to use this config on any type of unstable surface... but the stand's sturdy enough that it works, and I don't think it looks bad at all.

(Photos of the new Hangar and displays to come when they're in good enough shape ) (Now if I can just find a 1:35 Bud to take the stick.. I'll be real happy ...)

Looks too tall to use the Corgi stand, but hey it does look nice with the stand. My only concern is that the total height of the plane + stand
might become a 'vertical' space issue, thereby the only option, at least for me is to place the thing on top-most shelf base. Am I making any sense?

Yeah, it's a bit tall, so you do need shelving with some clearance -- most of my standard bookshelves would hold it easy, though. And the Detolf cabinet has lots of vertical space between the shelves -- some folks customize them and sodder in more shelves to fill the space. I wanted to be able to put one of the GMP birds up "in the air" so I like the tall stand. The only safety hazzard I see is that it's probably a bit more prone to tipping over than a B-25 if you happen to brush it while adjusting things in the cabinet, as I've done in the past....

I'll post a pic later of it in the cabinet with some "friends" and we'll see how well it really does work...

Here's a link to the cabinet it will go in... This way I can fit two GMPs on a shelf without "crowding". That's the idea at least...

Pics of the GMP birds on B-25 stands in the Detolf... going to clean up the wiring and such later, don't worry... :-)

Nice! And thanks for the tip.

IMHO, that Detolf is the best thing going - it costs just $60 and the planes look great in them. I have modified two of them for additional shelves and will be buying a third Detolf the next time I get to another IKEA.

Ok so that Detolf case IS the ideal display case for the big tall birds then! That's great, PappyB!

Yeah, but the trouble is -- I need another stand, and the only way to get that is to buy another B-25... think the wife will buy that reasoning?

They are a good deal, kind of a pain to build though (at least by yourself) -- I do like the Billy shelves and Bertby units better myself.. the latter is great for 1:72 birds and vehicles, and the Billy is great for everything up to 1:35 (no heavies though). The Detolf is nice for the big birds, too -- I wish it had one more shelf, then it would be perfect -- but I don't want to over-stuff it.

Re: Corgi B-25 stand may be used for GMP

I tell you what .....At work i showed my co-worker the B-25 stand with the GMP Mustang on it and told him i was going to find a way to customize it to make it look not so tall.
What does he do ....He came to work the next day with mahogany wood stand and drilled two hole in the bottom of his Tuskegee P-51 wing...It works but i don't have the guts to drill
two holes in my GMP Mustang.
