Douglas A-1 Skyraider

Was watching a show on Navy bombers last night on the Military Channel. The Skyraider was one of the bombers that they were discussing and they mentioned an interesting fact that I had never heard before, the Skyraider is the only bomber that has ever been able to carry more than it's own weight in ordnance.

Yup, it definitely could haul more than it's own butt in tight spots!

Yeah, me too. But I'd like to see a 1/48 version some day... (the 1/18 coming out might be a tad large...).

BTW, one of my colleagues at work flew those in Vietnam. His combat journal can be read at www.skyraider.org (click on "The A1 Skyraider Combat Journal"). Very, very interesting. He gave us a couple of briefings here on how they performed the Sandy mission back then, including some of his most memorable flights. He's got a couple of Silver Stars...

Re: Douglas A-1 Skyraider

Does that exclude the versatile Mosquito?

That takeoff weight for the Skyraider is pretty impressive. Good work finding those stats.

Re: Douglas A-1 Skyraider

They must have been star performers in Korea. A friend of mine said , we sent in the Sea Furys to take out a target on a hill, The Americans sent in the Skyraiders and took out the hill!

God Bless America.
