F-14 Retrospective and Defense Tech

Here's something I found at www.defensetech.org, which is a defense watchdog site edited by former Tomcat RIO Ward Carroll. Mr. Carroll, who is best known for his Punk's War Series of novels (3 at present), served out a full Navy Career in the Tomcat, and contributed to George Hall's Bye Bye Baby Tomcat retrospective. This thing is a series of still shots set to U-2's song Walk On, and is as he calls it, a fine tribute to a great airplane.

Just scroll down a bit to the youtube screen.

There's also an interesting debate and link to Defense Industry Daily on dogfighting and its relavance today above.

Aloha F-14, you will be missed by everyone but the Iranians.

Re: F-14 Retrospective and Defense Tech

It sounds like history repeating itself. During Vietnam, the "experts" said that dogfighting ability was no longer relevant. Robin Olds proved otherwise. Dogfighting ability may not be relavent facing the 3rd world countries we've been in confilct with lately. However, the day may come where we face extremely well trained pilots in better performing aircraft. Imagine a scenario where MiG-31s take out out AWACs and dogfight experts, in Su-35s, face F-22s. I fear that, unless a modern day Robin Olds steps up to set the Air Force straight, we're not going to fare very well. I believe it is naive, and short sighted, to think that radar technology, from foreign countries like Russia and China, will not defeat the F-22's stealth characteristics within a few years if it hasn't already.
