Re: A UK view of the Canadian Military

While we're on the subject of the Canadian Military, we just lost 6 more of our guys to an IED in Afghanistan on Sunday. Very eerie in light of the Easter holiday, and the Vimy celebrations. Maybe the jihadist *(*&(*&*&^ planned it that way. I realize the boys in Iraq are taking it just as bad, if not worse, but with our small army, it just seems to hit home more. Thoughts are with the military families everywhere.

Shows that whatever armour and protection our guys use, (they were blown up in a LAV 3 20 ton troop transport) the bad guys just find ways to make bigger bombs. Something this size was professional, and definitely came from some clown like Ahmadenijad.

Re: A UK view of the Canadian Military

There were 2 comments that caused me to post the article. 2 years ago I worked in Detroit for a 1 year contract and one of my fellow workers found out I collected WWII planes and his comment was:

"Too bad there weren't any Canadians in WWII or you could collect their planes, guess you will have to settle for US planes. Well we won the war anyways."
There were many months of re-educating to do with this one.

The 2nd comment from a different co-worker who was listening to our many re-education conversations was "Too bad Canada doesn't have a military any more so you wouldn't have to rely on the US for protection."
Again many education conversaions were needed.

The saddest part of these 2 comments, was that they were made from highly educated well paid professionals, but I know they don't represent all Americans.

I don't think those two represent all American's, but it is something that the majority of Americans believe. And you will never change that attitude because of the influence of Hollywood and the other media that perpetuate these myths.

I don't think that most Americans think that way. But there are always some out there that just don't know any better.

Let's now not go stereotyping whole populations/societies due to the behaviour and opinions of a few of their members . Most Americans I know are reasonably well informed and open-minded with a 'can-do' attitude towards life in general. Naivete from individuals, however, is present in all societies and can usually only be overcome as a result of experience and education ...

Re: A UK view of the Canadian Military

Hi guys,
Since we're chatting about WAR I don't feel anyone has won a war. It's sort of like kicking an Ant nest, I keep kicking and stomping and it appears to be a lot of dead ants but what is really done is to PO the nest and come to find they'll be back next year. the thing about collecting our die cast is that it has allowed us to research into why these aircraft/tanks and boats were used. Russia had to get the heck out of Afghanistan because they are very well trained in mountain fighting. Now Korea is back in our nightmares and we defanately didn win that war. No one wins Wars!!! Guys

I didn't want my funny stories to in any way represent views of the Majority of Americans. I know these individuals were very smart, just had no interest historically or otherwise in any military forces other than the US.

They also felt very silly for thier comments and it encouraged them to look at the world from a different point of view.

Off topic warning:
2 more funny American stories.
One of the guys I worked with was on Belle Isle (on the Detroit river, which is between the US and Canada) when his girlfriend turned to him and asked what state is that, it is very pretty. As a side note, in that part of the Detroit river, the Detroit side is very industrial, and the Windsor side is all City parkland. Even he was embarrised when he figured out she wasn't just turned around, and didn't know that was Canada.

2nd story.
My cousin is a border guard at the Detroit - Windsor bridge, and 4 guys in a car pull up with ski's on the roof, and were looking for the ski slopes... It was July and about 85-90 Degree's out.

Off topic Warning over.

Hey, Alphie, I just re-checked my history books, and yes, I did remember well, we DID win WW I and WW II (and a few others). I don't think even Herr Hitler woud deny that if he were alive. Even the post-war (WW II) occupations of Germany and Japan worked out pretty well, IMHO.

Wars are won all the time all over the world. The fact that there are occasional exceptions which could qualify as "no one won" doesn't negate that first fact.
