Re: Nice Things to Talk About

Jim! You must be the only person in Britain who missed it :

Meldrew fans lay floral tributes

Fans of TV sitcom One Foot in the Grave have laid flowers on the spot where its central character Victor Meldrew was killed off. Several bouquets have been placed on the road in Hampshire where Victor was mown down by a hit-and-run driver in Monday night's episode.

The death of Victor, played by actor Richard Wilson, marked the end of the hit BBC show's 10-year run.
More than 10 million people are estimated to have tuned in to BBC One to watch the demise of the UK's favourite fictional grump.
The tributes began arriving on Tuesday morning near a railway bridge in a Hampshire village, where Victor had his final moments.
Some of the floral arrangements are accompanied with fond messages
.
Manager of the nearby Bridge Hotel and pub Kathy Airey said locals were bemused by the bouquets.
"At first we thought it was locals but we have seen a car pull up to lay flowers.

"I think it's bizarre and a bit sad and I could not believe it when I first saw them.

"Obviously people take things seriously. We are expecting Elvis Presley to turn up at any moment."
Even so, outside the pub a chalk board makes its own reference to Victor's death, playing on his famous catchphrase.
"RIP Victor Meldrew who died outside this pub. You'd better Belieeeve it," it says.
Victor's death was filmed in July last year
.
Ms Airey said Wilson had popped into her hotel pub for a couple of pints ahead of the scene.
She added: "He was really nice but he wouldn't say 'I don't believe it when we asked'."
Wilson will next be seen starring in a new ITV sitcom about international banking called High Stakes.

Victor's death scene was filmed in a Hampshire village

Talking Re: Nice Things to Talk About

The end aired several years ago, Dilligafocau...........Jim seems to have missed it.

For those of you who have never heard of Victor Meldrew, he was the leading character in the BBC series, " One Foot in the Grave ". In that series his character was depicted as retired, disgruntled, traditionalist, conservative and full of disbelief that Britain was going down the tubes!

Victor's catchphrase, " I don't believe it! " became a rallying call for the Baby-Boomers and the bewildered. The sort of people whose mise-en-scene has altered beyond all recognition as one nationally recognised part of the picture has vanished after another. As all the accepted wisdom and truths have faded and died, so have the Victors of the world.

There's a little bit of Victor in all of us !

( but you've got to feel sorry for his long-suffering wife! )

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

I'm watching " Downfall " tonight. I had called my mate Mike earlier to have a chat when he informed me that he had located a version of the movie which has an extra 17+ minutes which were deleted from the theatrical release. The two versions which I have are rated at 147 minutes.

Has anyone else seen this " extended " version? If so, what did you think of it?

" The Downfall " or " Der Untergang " is one of the top ten movies ever made about WW2, in my humble opinion, although I am more interested in the less senior characters, and how they fared than I am in Hitler's mad rants and excuses, despite Bruno Ganz's brilliant performance.

Talking Re: Nice Things to Talk About

It ain't no good to rant and broil,
Gnashing your teeth on the price of oil.
Gas-Guzzling monsters have had their day,
Now bicycles will hold our sway.

( get the bicycle clips out, lads. Also, a good pair of boots ! )

I've seen this movie several times, Mo. I think it is a masterpiece!
