Re: Nice Things to Talk About

ps,

What does Skunky want? Does he want us all to get serious about everything in the world? Come, come, Skunky, you oughtta lighten up! ( maybe he needs a holiday in the woods? )

His statement to "get serious" is actually one of his most serious sarcisms, yet, in a way, VERY funny, statements! YOU GO, SKUNKY!

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

Stunned into silence by the intrusion of a Cyclopean Pooch. Poor Towser, I wonder how he lost his eye?

Never mind.

The BBC had a wonderful show on last night. It was all about the Battle of Britain Memorial flight and centred round the pilots who flew the planes, and the mechanics and engineers who restore the planes and keep them flying.

Lots of shots of : Lancs, Spits and Hurricanes ( like this )

One of the most telling parts was a pilot who was discussing the first time going solo on a Spit and Hurricane. He explained that he'd had 6000 flying hours in all sorts of modern aircraft and that he'd never gone solo in a plane without hours of practice on simulators and dual-control aircraft.

He marvelled at the guys of 1939 who had to go solo on a Spitfire or Hurricane after 15 hours on a trainer, then go into combat after 15 hours training in a single-seat monocoque plane ( if they were lucky enough to get 15 hours! ).

One of the pilots was taking a Spitfire to a display. he explained to the audience how it felt to be flying the very last Spit which had taken part in the BOB, and that he was taking it back to its old wartime airfield for the first time since 1940. There was something ghostly about it all, and the pilot further explained that he started to talk to the Spitfire and tell her that she was going home. A truly touching experience.

( from the BBC Press Office : )

Go to the Official Battle of Britain site where you can get a free Spit and Lanc screensaver :

The Lancaster bomber, Hurricane and Spitfire aeroplanes are the spectacular stars of a special BBC documentary celebrating the 50th anniversary of Lincolnshire's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

The Flight (BBC One in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and East Midlands, 7.30pm, Friday 4 May 2007) charts the pride and passion of the team based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire who work on and fly the historic planes at air shows around the country.

The half-hour film, a year in the making, includes interviews with pilots, engineers and war veterans plus exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the organisation behind the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight over London last year.

This highlight of the flying season took months of preparation. The Flight reveals for the first time that the pilots flying the Hurricane and Spitfire in the flypast agreed to risk their lives in an emergency rather than bale out over the capital.

Their plan was to "ditch" in the Thames if the 60-year-old engines powering their venerable warplanes failed over the capital.

"It has potential to have lethal consequences as these aircraft do not ditch well," admits Squadron Leader Al Pinner.

In another remarkable sequence, a highly-qualified instructor who teaches pilots to fly the RAF's new Typhoon Eurofighter struggles to land a Forties vintage Hurricane, bouncing on landing and having to take off again to prevent a crash landing.

As well as the Queen's flypast, the team took part in more than 400 events during the year and they talk emotionally on camera about the pride, elation and honour of flying such priceless artefacts of the nation's heritage.

They also pay glowing tribute to the heroism of the teenage pilots who actually flew the planes in the Second World War.
