Re: Nice Things to Talk About

If I ran for election I would be honest and tell the electorate that I am doing this to get loads of money to spend on diecast.

Well at least its true.

Jim, you'll get my vote if that is one of the campaign promises.

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

Folks we can argue politics until the cows come home but the number one problem is the politicians themselves.

Whatever they choose to label themselves they are all rubbish, money grubbing corrupt greedy ruthless self centered ego maniacs.

ALL OF THEM, I said this before, since when did any politician upon election ever represent his electorate.

Its a case of thanks very much see you in 5 years or so.
(now wheres the trough so I can stick my nose in).

Hey I think I may have become a little cynical in my old age.

If I ran for election I would be honest and tell the electorate that I am doing this to get loads of money to spend on diecast.

Jim - you'd get my vote. Now about that Diecast addiction tax break -

Ooops!

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

I think I may have to go into boat building. I dont know if the news is out yet but Yorkshire has just experienced its heaviest rainfall ever, said to be 4 inch in 6 hours. Major flooding and some loss of life although at the moment news is still scarce.

I am safe on top of the hill but I cannot get through to my local town because the road is flooded.

The RAF has helicopters out doing rescue work as I type this.

The rain has eased at the moment so maybe the worst is over. A lot of people are trapped but are safe in the upper floors of buildings.

I was watching the news unfold on TV and the power went down, It was out for a couple of hours but during that time it was really worrying. I wondered just how bad this was getting and also how my friends were managing. I have since been in contact with them and they are OK except for one and he has his cellar full of water up to the second step from the top!!!

God Bless America.

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

I was on holiday in the middle of the countyside on an open road no houses etc and they lay in wait behind some trees and zapped me doing 38mph in a 30 zone.

A 30 zone in the middle of nowhere I ask you, was that a set up to get tourists or not.

That was my first ever ticket in 41 years of motoring.

Two notes: 1. Unless you're not relating all facts (and I'm sure you are), that speed limit is RIDICULOUS.

2. "Motoring." I love the English way of saying things.

Thanks guys, it was a bit grim in the valley bottoms but today has been rain free so the river levels are slowly falling.

Parts of Yorkshire have been hit very badly and the city of Sheffield has been severely affected.
It has rained for 3 weeks without a pause and then 2 days ago we had a severe storm and torrential rain. It was so bad that around my place it stripped the leaves from the trees! The main road into town was flooded and also 2 big trees were torn down and fell across the road.
The ground couldnt take any more so the rain just ran off straight into the rivers causing flash floods.
The main motorway link to the south is closed because a dam is in danger of breaching and if it does then the motorway would be deluged. The emergency services have been trying to pump water out of it to relieve the pressure. Every one down stream has been evacted just in case.
Sadly its reported 3 people have lost their lives during the floods, but it could have been a lot more considering the speed that the rivers burst their banks.

At the moment 1400 people have been made homeless, power is still out in many parts of Sheffield city and the place is just a mess.
I sometimes grumble about the fact that its always a few degrees colder living up on the hills but at least I am safe from flooding up here.
I heard a really sad story today, a lady was walking her dogs and they ran off and somehow were carried away by the flood!
Today the poor lady after searching for hours found them on the stream bank drowned.

The area is still on full flood alert and more heavy rain is forecast.

The stats are that 10 inches of rain have fallen so far this month, 4 inches of that on one day.

God Bless America.

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

The weather is really crazy if we are getting all that rain at once. God knows what must be happening on the continent if we are having all the rain dumped on the U.K. and they are receiving none. Is the weather pattern shifting?

I guess that I'd better not open up this debate again......but when the water reaches my upper lip, you'd better bet I'm gonna!

Glad to hear that all is well with you and yours, Jim. I feel sorry for all the folk who are caught up in the flood disaster. This is going to take months and hundreds of millions of pounds to sort out. In the news tonight it featured one single mum with three kids who had lost everything, and she had no flood insurance.

Thank God we have a Welfare State which should help her to get started again.

You're serious, aren't you!?! My question would be: WHY did she not have flood insurance?

Captain Eddie

Some folk are daft, Captain. The point is, no matter how stupid you are, our Country will look after you. That is a good thing.

Now you know why the world and its uncle are beating a path to our door!
