Re: Nice Things to Talk About

Whooooo !

" Fighting the Blue " starts today on UKTV History. Mostly Battle of Britain pilots talking about the battle and their training, planes and tactics. I've never seen it before, so it should prove to be fascinating. I don't know how many episodes it runs to. Have any of you guys seen it before ?

It starts in two minutes, so I'm off !!!!

Cheers,

MoMo

Talking Re: Nice Things to Talk About

" Fighting the Blue " transpired to be an excellent documentary, making constructive use of scenes and sequences from the movie " The Battle of Britain " to illustrate the anecdotes and history of the people who were there.

Episode one gave the viewer an overview of the people, planes and strategy and tactics. It discusses, confidently, how Dowding was the leader who planned for, and provided the calm, winning policies concerning radar, planes and the careful use of scarce resources. Much time is also dedicated to examining how Dowding was assassinated, professionally. I did not know much about Dowding's claims that he "saw" his young, dead pilots and felt deeply their loss, which he took as his personal loss, and grieved profoundly for them.

Episode two concentrates on the role of women in the struggle. The radar-operators, technicians, ferry-pilots, etc.

Episode three explained how Trenchard's pre-war structuring of RAF recruitment and training paved the way for victory. Also, the contribution of the overseas pilots from Poland, Checkoslovakia and the Empire countries is discussed and appreciated. Without them Britain would have foundered as the pool of British pilots who lived, and who could still fly, diminished.

Polish pilots were the group with the highest average kill-ratio. They lived and flew to kill their enemies who had destroyed their country. In fact, B.O.B. pilots, even many Polish ones, state that those who were hell-bent on killing the Germans often caused problems by ignoring W.T. procedure, and also getting in the way of more competent R.A.F. fliers who were jockying for a kill.

I can't wait to see the next episodes which are being aired each day.

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

Ahhhh, the kids are at Grandma's, the wife got paged and the house is mine. Good time to get all the last few weeks planes out of the closets and see what we have here. Sheppard Smith soft in the background and a cold Sam Adams...
Been enjoying those seasonal specials from SA and Leinie's collections. Tonight's special brew is the Octoberfest from SA which I felt I just had to buy up while there are still a few leaves blowing around the yard. The simple things. And now to my new decert No.1 Sqn. Hurricane from the front hall closet thanks to Datacroft.

If you like Oktoberfest brews, Hofbrau's is tops on my list. If you find some, try it, you'll like it (of course any brew by Hofbrau is tasty).

You taklin' the Hofbrau like in Munchen or is it something else? I didn't know the brewery released stuff here I guess.

The one I really liked from SA was called Old Fezziwig Ale but I haven't seen it in a few years.

Hofbrau Munchen would be correct sir, you generally find their brews in stores that have large import sections. I generally buy it at a wine/beer shop that's local and every now and then my dad picks some up for me at Anderson's in Toledo (he hooked me up with quite the load of various Hofbrau brews last year for Christmas, I had the Oktoberfest, Original, and Dunkel which is my favorite). It'll run you between $6.99 to $10.99 for a 6 pack (at least that's what I've found south of you here in Ohio). Never had Old Fezziwig Ale.

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

I've had some of the Hofbrau beers and was actually there in '01. The kiddies were drinking some nasty little brew mixed with lemon soda.
maybe derhamburgerjung can chime in....
Forget what they called it. I can't get those here but we do have a great Pizza place 30min away that sells all the Paulaner beers and I think they're similar.

Big wheat beer fan in the summer.

Beer mixed with lemon soda would be a > Radler < in southern Germany or > Alster < in norther Germany ( Alster is a river in Hamburg )
I never saw this one served in the US but when I asked for it, the waitress was aware what I was talking about ( At least in Colorado...)

Parsig, did you enjoyed you trip to Munich?

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

I did enjoy the Munich trip. We did all the typical mad King Ludwig side trips and the Oberammergau visit and the walks around the city and Schloss Nymphenburg were neat. I liked the idea of filing the bachelor pad with painting of all the women he'd....well you know. Spent the better part on one evening in the brau hause downtown.

Visited Dachau too and would gladly go back to Bavaria again someday. I like the German culture places the best in Europe and have never felt more at home overseas than I did in the Alps and Bavaria. If I win the lottery, I'm moving there. The food, the homes, all the intangibles just feel more like home than even England did. I'll get back there someday.
