Glasgow, Scotland | | | | Re: Nice Things to Talk About Sports Fans : check out the sports news tonight. It's Quarter-Finals day in the Men's Singles at Wimbledon. Andy Murray plays Nadal of Spain....that's the one which all the Brit fans are waiting on. Let's see if Murray can hack it!
Rafael Nadal (Spain, left-handed) 20pts
b 1986 Manacor, Mallorca
Runner-up 2006; 2007
On his Wimbledon debut in 2003, Nadal became the youngest player, at 17, to reach the third round of the men’s singles since Boris Becker, who was 16 in 1984. The king of clay proved that, unlike the majority of Spanish clay-court players, he is not of the “grass is for cows” mentality. He reached two consecutive finals in 2006 and 2007, with Roger Federer his conqueror on both occasions. He is Bjorn Borg’s tip for the title this year.
| Nadal can end Murray dream
Andy Murray looks capable of giving Rafael Nadal a run for his money in their quarter-final clash at Wimbledon on Wednesday.
But the British No 1, chalked up at a best price of 7-2 by Coral, is likely to fall short because Nadal, who has won their previous three encounters, is a player at the peak of his powers and, arguably, superior to him in all departments.
And, perhaps most significant, Murray has had precious little time to recover from his four-hour epic against Richard Gasquet on Monday night, which he won after staring defeat in the face.
You need a thick wallet to consider backing Nadal at a best price of 2-9 but splitting stakes on the Spaniard winning 3-1 (totesport go 11-4) or 3-2 (Sporting Odds offer 8-1) could pay dividends.
Nadal beat Murray 3-2 the first time that they crossed swords - in last year’s Australia Open - before beating him in straight sets in the Madrid Masters (2-0). It was the same story in the Hamburg Masters (2-0) in May.
Wednesday will be the first time that the pair have met on grass but, while Nadal is at his best on clay, the World No 2’s record on turf remains impressive. Roger Federer has proved his conqueror in the past two Wimbledon finals but there has been no disgrace in that.
Patriotic support for Murray has been thin. Nick Weinberg, of Ladbrokes, said: “Murray is yet to attract any significant support. Our big hitters have come in for Nadal convinced that they’re buying money.”
Men’s outright betting: 4-6 R Federer, 11-8 R Nadal, 16-1 A Murray, 25-1 M Safin, 50-1 M Ancic, 100-1 R Schuettler, 125-1 A Clement, F Lopez.
