Re: Nice Things to Talk About

If thats a burnt crewman in the cupola, thats not all that is wrong with this dio. The broken track makes no sense, nor does the missing drive sprocket. And for that much burning it would've popped the top of the superstructure easily after the ammo cooked off.
Its pleasing to the eye, save the burnt crewman. But far from accurate.

Jeez, I never noticed that before.

What do you guys think of these figures? They are on one of the British mail-order sites at about $30 per set. Seems like a bargain to me.

I don't know who the two German and two RAF pilots in the first group are. Do you ?

BRITANNIA GONE ? JIM, THE RAVENS WILL BE NEXT! WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING TO THIS COUNTRY? OUR COINAGE HAS BEEN TURNED INTO A JIG-SAW PUZZLE AND AN AGE-OLD SYMBOL IS SEEN AS PAST ITS SELL-BY DATE!

IT'S AKIN TO DROPPING THE EAGLE FROM THE INSIGNIA OF THE UNITED STATES.

WHAT NEXT?

Britannia rules no more as new UK coins unveiled

The new coins will enter circulation in the summer

Look carefully at the seven sleek designs on the right. Over the next year, a billion copies will be produced and the artwork will join the most iconic in the country.
For the first time since 1968, the Royal Mint has chosen new designs for the reverse of Britain’s small change. The coins, worth between 1p and £1, became legal tender today.
A public competition was launched to redesign the coins and Matthew Dent, 26, a graphic designer from Bangor, North Wales, successfully emerged from a field of 4,000 entrants.
The six coins, ranging up to 50p, can be arranged to form the outline of the royal shield of arms, which is embossed in full on the £1 coin.

“I can imagine people playing with them, having them on a tabletop and enjoying them,” Mr Dent said. “I felt it was important to have a theme running through from one to another."
Mr Dent, who lives in London, was paid around £35,000 for his designs, but he will not receive any royalties from their reproduction. There are currently more than 27 billion coins in the UK.
The new coins are currently being minted and will come into circulation this summer, gradually replacing the old coins with familiar designs such as the portcullis on the one penny piece and Britannia on the 50 pence piece. The old coins will remain legal tender until eventually they slip out of circulation
.
Andrew Stafford, chief executive of the Royal Mint, said the current portrait of the Queen, introduced in 1998, would remain on the flip-side of the coins.
“It’s the only work of art that every member of the general public touches every day. That is important to the nation’s way of life,” Mr Stafford said.
“We had to make sure that the coin design was true to the heritage of British coins and gave fresh inspiration and modernity to something that has been in existence for 40 years.”

They suck.

That's what the British public says, after much criticism. I can hear the howls from the Home Counties of England from here !

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

Iconic images of the 20th century - in Lego

Some people never grow out of their childhood fascinations. But at the age of 33, Mike Stimpson decided it was time to put his to a creative use, combining his long-standing love of Lego with a new-found passion for photography to recreate some of the world’s most iconic images.

Stimpson, a computer programmer from Birmingham, used the well-loved children’s toy to reconstruct scenes from famous photographs, such as Charles C. Ebbet's 1932 "Lunch atop a skyscraper" and Henri Cartier-Bresson's "Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare."

And although Lego men are endowed with a permanent grin, Stimpson nevertheless put them to work in some of the most horrific images of war from the 20th century
.
Shooting them mostly in black and white, he spent hours painstakingly arranging the scenes and experimenting with lighting to ensure he got the right effect. His devotion to detail is apparent in all his recreations, from patterns on clothing to roadmarkings in backdrops
.
Stimpson next hopes to recreate Diego Maradona’s notorious “Hand of God” goal against England and soldiers raising the US flag at Iwojima during World War Two.
