Re: Nice Things to Talk About

Well Jim there was "The Angel and the Badman" with of course John Wayne. A wounded outlaw that shacks up with quackers after being wounded, falls for the girl and gives up his evil ways for farming.
The Lone Ranger was great, but my favorite cowboy on Saturdays was and always will be the Duke!

Shawn

So what are your favourite J.W. movies Shawn?

My favourites are : " The Searchers ", " They Were Expendable ", " Red River ", " Fort Apache " and " True Grit ".

The Duke may have spent his youth in Glendale Ca., but he was born in Iowa.

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

All of them!
I have some of the 1930s saturday $.05 movies he made. These are the kind that you had to wait until next week to find out if the hero saves the girl and the day.
Some stand outs are:
Sands of Iwo Jima
McClintok
Quet Man
True Grit
The Seachers
The John Ford Cavalry trilogy
And The Longest Day, he played the Bn Cmdr ( LTC Benjamin Vandervort) of my old unit 2/505 PIR.

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

Yes Shawn. I like all of those except " The sands of Iwo Jima ". I find the Duke's character in that one too much. But the real reason I think that it is bad are the action sequences........but that's not the Duke's fault.

The Duke is still the third most popular movie star in the USA. Not bad for a guy who's been dead and gone for about twenty years.

( and no-one will ever forget Kirk either, Rush )

Oh Sgt Stryker is more real than you know. And it must have been good because he almost got the Oscar for it.
As for James T. Kirk, that is a character that wont go away anytime soon. Heck, I say that since he was "killed" in the Nexus, he could be brought back to life with some creative writting. That is a character that should just fade away like the old soldier of General MacArthur's speech.

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

I drive by the town where Wayne was born, but I've yet to stop there. Maybe I'll get around to it.

Hey Cav. I was just flying over Iowa ( on Google Earth ). I didn't get to the Duke's old town though.

John Wayne would be 101 years old, if he were still with us, Art.

Stryker was a pussy , compared to the teachers in my old High School !
