Re: Nice Things to Talk About

What I appreciate about this debate is that, although the opinions are diverse, it is conducted in a 'relatively' appropriate spirit of respect and civility - definitely an example of how sensitive topics can be discussed on the forum without 'flaming' out .

Now we have to measure 'success' in hearts and minds, which is much more difficult.

There is no heart and there is only crazed hatred in the mind.

You cannot reason with those that have none.

In Britain today we have the enemy within that seeks to turn Britain into an alien state.

Little by little its happening, by the time people wake up to the fact it may be too late.

I think its too late already.

Hmmm , here I go getting into areas that are not suitable for a diecast forum,
I think I will retire from discussion now.

C'mon Jim. You've gotta get tore in here!

I agree that the U.K. ain't the place it was. On the other hand, was it ever the place it was? Sometimes I think that we are harking back to a place which never really existed. A sort of arcadian/industrial land of equalibrium in which Hovis vendors struggled up hills and cursed their bicycle clips while cherubic children played hopscotch on the car-free streets.

Britain, far from being a land of conservatism, has always been a land of change. If you don't change, you wilt.

The fundamentalist radicalists must be hopping ( without the scotch ) with glee at the uncertainty and division which they have sponsored and nurtured. I think that the chains into which we have fallen were forged from the ores of fear and prejudice, and that there is very little that we have to fear.

I don't like change. Never have. And I don't like being threatened either. I think that our fear of change is the curse of our age which is exploited by those who hate us, not those who wish to join us.

Mo, what is your recommended course of action to alleviate the fear and prejudices?

I don't have one. If I did, I'd be working for Gordon. I'll think about it though.

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

On another tack, it looks as if all you Republicans out there will get your dream ticket for the Democratic Party nomination for the President of the United States.

Hillary has made a comeback and Obama is coasting. As someone else on the forum posted, it is just what the Republicans want. The Democrats are going to fight it out, toe to toe, until the last ditch is taken and both candidates will end up being quite sore and battered by the experience.

Yes, it's getting to be down and dirty. While McCain can now take a short rest, but start to plan his campaign, the two Democratic contenders have to expend more political ammunition fighting each other while becoming more and more exposed. The Republicans are dancing with glee.

As the Democrats cut down to the wire, McCain will be chipping away at the American voter's mind. Some say that this could backfire on the Republicans. If they begin too early, they may wane long before the Presidential election takes place. Tricky.

While the Republicans and McCain make hay, the question about who will emerge as the Democratic candidate will continue to dominate the media. Speculation about who will win at the tape will sell a lot of copy, but less trees will die to service those who ponder on the topic of potential running mates.

Who will be McCain's running mate? But, more interestingly, is there any chance of Hillary and Obama joining forces, after the dust has settled and for the good of the party, as a dynamic duo?

Now there is the stuff of Hollywood soap opera. Just imagine it:

Obama as President and Hillary as Vice-President. Hubby Bill as second lady's first man and Mrs Obama gets to choose the drapes as Hillary fumes. It's got to be a winner.

I'll write the first script called " Curtains for Mrs Obama ! " Should be quite an opening piece of drama:

Obama : ( talking in cabinet with trusted cronies ) " Now, boys, where can we send that ........ woman to where she'll be out the picture? "

First guy : " How about Guam ? Couldn't she do a goodwill tour ? "

Second guy :" Good idea, but have we sent anyone to Peru lately? Aren't they about to have a war there soon? "

Obama : " Where's Peru ?"

First guy : " Peru's down south ! "

Second guy : " In Georgia ? "

Obama : " I'll peruse the map ! "

etc., etc.,

It's a soap which could last eight seasons.

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

In my opinion, John McCain has a reasonably good chance of becoming the next President of the US. I'm also wondering who he may consider as his potential 'Veep' - any ideas?

Re: Nice Things to Talk About

I put some money on Shawn! Why are all former Presidents also officers? Why not put a retired NCO in the White House?

I don't think this will EVER happen. Hillary as prez, and Obama as a vice-prez maybe, but I don't see Hillary being second fiddle to ANYONE.
