Just thought of another plane that would make a nice 1/72nd addition. The Martin Maryland would make a really nice looking model and would have some interesting paint schemes.

Yep, the Balitmore was another slick looking medium. It and the Maryland would make a neat pair.

I have both planes in plastic, plus a tiny Maryland diecast ( 1:144 ) from Atlas. The Baltimore was a really narrow plane. As I recall,---and I may be wrong on this--- it could seat only one pilot up front, rather than the paired pilot/copilot seating used on most WWII bombers.

You are right about the Baltimore being a narrow ship, similar to Hampden in some aspects.

Re: What WWII planes would you like to see in diecast?

I'd really like to add these to my 1:72 collection:

-- B-17c/d (polished metal or olive USAAF)
-- P-39 Air Cobra (olive drab USAAF)
-- C-46 Commando
-- Manchester
-- Bristol Blenheim Mk I (Night Fighter)
-- Short Stirling
-- Airspeed Envoy

That would tickle me pink!

I was just thinking about the early B-17s the other day. I'd go for a C-47 before the C-46 though. Air Cobra is coming from HM. The others I'll pass on.

I would have to go with the C-46 over the C-47 for two reasons. One being that it has not been modeled yet and second being the C-46 had a fairly streamlined look for a transport.

The C-46 is sexy, but it wasn't the best bird for Paratroopers in WW2.

Yes this is true, but it did good work in Burma.

True -- the C-46 hasn't been done in 1:72 anywhere to my knowledge, but it has a lot of profile in other scales and in the kit world. Somehow I have missed any representation of the C-47 though, save a couple of obscure kits. That said, I'd still like one! (As well as a polished metal pre-war B-17B/C -- or 299!)

Hope springs eternal!
