I think there are too many channels running for too many hours. How can anyone fill all that air time with quality.

Re: Flower Arranging for Men

Lost in Space!!! Yes I remember that one Starman. It was on prime time TV over here. Dr Smith always made me chuckle. I have to admit I love Science Fiction.

When the original series of Startrek came out I was glued to the screen every thursday night. (see, I can even remember the day it was on). The new version of Startrek is Ok but I think it has drifted away from the original idea of exploration.

Is this an age related thing or is it true that they just dont make much good TV these days?

I agree, most (not all) of the newer stuff is garbage.

I have never seen that show.

You must be too young, Starman! The great Brit TV show, " The Adventures of Robin Hood " was a huge hit in the USA with kids from about 1956 onwards. It starred Richard Greene as Robin. There were lots of other regulars, including a few Maid Marions, but Richard stuck it to the end!

A US TV Guide circa 1957

below, from left to right : The Sherrif of Nottingham, Friar Tuck, ?, Alfie Bass as Mutch ?

Next, a parade of Maid Marions : Top, Olivia DeHavilland as the Maid in Errol's movie, then? and lastly, at the bottom, Maid Marion in Richard Greene's TV series! This gave toy manufacturers a boost. Girls could tote a bow and dress in Lincoln Green!

Next, Robin drawing his bow, Maid Marion mark 2 and Little John the Scots actor, Archie Duncan...that's why he has the mad stare, like he's seeing ' the red mist' !

Yes Jim. Star Trek was the best because it was original and took chances with the plots. None of that touchy/feely crap which came later. The show took bold steps and dared to go where no man had been before when it featured the first kiss between a white man and a black woman shown on US TV. Also, it had a character with the worst Stage-Scots accent in history!

" Ah tell ye Jim, the engines' ll no tak it! " and " Ma Berylium crystals are deid! "

The show was a natural development from a few ideas generated by the movie, " The Forbidden Planet " which had been a hit in the late 50s for MGM. This movie featured Robbie the Robot who had a makeover to reappear in the TV hit show for kids, " Lost in Space "

Robbie was the most interesting character in a show which used the same plot every week, and had a succession of monsters made from day-glow, pink fur-fabric! Or was that Star Trek?

Robbie's tag line was : " Danger, Danger Will Robinson. Alien presence! "

The Robinsons and the Professor ( the rat! ) and Pilot. Also, you can see the robot with a new look, but it's really Robbie in a new guise. They just lifted the whole character from " The Forbidden Planet " !

Below. One of the most expensive original posters which you can buy from a golden age of Hollywood :

The movie featured a Hyperdrive Flying Saucer, incredible special effects, a crew which later served as the model for Star Trek, Robbie, a planet which powered everything on the surface and which could repair itself, but also
" Creatures from the ID ", which could destroy your enemies just from dreams, and without you being aware of the danger! Heady stuff from the 50s....and all based on Shakespeare's " The Tempest ". ( remember how many times the Bard influenced all those Star Trek shows ? )

Like most of you, I don't watch TV a lot now. Some comedy, documentaries, the news, but that's mainly it!

More TV = more crapolla. Less TV = more power in fewer hands. Thousands of TV stations = more power to the people ( and it can only really happen on the internet )

Speculate away, till your heart's content, but the Golden Age of TV Innocence has been dead and buried for 30 years!

Starman ,some time ago on the TV programme Antiques Roadshow a Robbie the Robot was valued at $200 (if my memory is working correctly). Have a look in the loft to see if you still have it. You can sell it and buy a P40 or two with the proceeds!!!

Re: Flower Arranging for Men

Hi MO, friar Tuck was my heroe , he always made me laugh.Another point I remember was the dreadfull studio mock ups of the woodland camp and forest. Trees made from cardboard etc. All great stuff though to a small boy.
However my all time undisputed champion of champions show was without a doubt and wins by a mile .....Wait for it......

"THE LONE RANGER"

WHAT! Those trees weren't real, you've just shattered my childhood memories Jim. Next thing you'll be saying is that the kid from Gentle Ben is now as bald as a badger's bum and doing bit parts

Btw, on a similar Robin Hood theme we used to have a French show in Australia called "The King's Outlaw", the main character was called Thierry La Fronde and he used a slingshot instead of a bow and arrow. From memory the best thing about the show was its theme tune.

Re: Flower Arranging for Men

The best shows were:
MacHale's Navy
Hogan's Heroes
Rat Patrol
Combat
Baa Baa Black Sheep
The Wild Wild West
Earnest Borgnine once said that a mother thanked him for MN, because everyday when the show came on she knew where her kid was. Of course the saturday/sunday morning war movie days were good too.

The shows which were not on TV in the UK were : MacHale's Navy, Rat Patrol, and The Wild Wild West!. Also Baa Baa Black Sheep was not shown here.

I have consequently seen MacHale's Navy in the States on re-runs and thought that it was good fare for kids...quite funny. Rat Patrol, I've never heard of or seen. I know about the Black Sheep, and I know about tThe Wild, Wild west. because I've read about them, and The Black Sheep have been the topic of some discussion on the forum.

One question! When " Leave it to Beaver" was shown, did kids fall into two camps : pro- Beaver Cleaver and anti- Beaver Cleaver? I think that I would have been Anti-Beaver because he was too much of a goodie-goodie. I saw a few of the shows on one of my visits to the States, and liked their innocence...perhaps I'm really Pro-Beaver, now that I am grown up.

Any intel on Rat Patrol?
