Nice Globemaster, but lets keep in mind that this is a "family oriented" forum....

Agreed, between this thread and the "Random Rants" one new low depths of sexist and vulgar behaviour are becoming evident and do not fall within the scope of acceptable humour or conduct that is expected from members of this forum . Keep the juvenile 'locker room' talk to the minimum or preferably take it elsewhere if you cannot contain yourselves ... Closing of threads and deletion of posts is not something we take lightly but will not hesitate to do so if this type of thing continues unabated.

Yes, I am guilty of taking the bait too, but that doesn't excuse mine or anyone else's actions.

Heed the warnings of the staff or these types of threads will come to an end. I expect members to be respectful but to also look out for their fellow member’s threads. If you see straying or antagonistic posts try and alter the direction of the thread by posting something relevant to the threads original topic.

It's in situations like these that users can affect, for better or worse, how constraining the forum's rules are.

Sitting Bull and George Armstrong Custer

I was watching a documentary last week about The Battle of the Little Big Horn. This promped me to then watch " They Died With Their Boots On ", which is debatably the best movie version of the event, but entirely without any reference to the real events, but nevertheless a brilliant action movie.

In searching the net I found that there are thousands of articles about this iconic event in U.S. Military History. Most of them focus on the real events of the battle, eschewing the legendary myths which have clouded our take on it and which have surround it in misty spin for a century.

Hollwood has a lot to answer for.

Re: Flower Arranging for Men

I thought that I'd just post this pic of one of the local transport items to calm everyone down.

This is a pic of the " Waverley ", the world's last sea-going paddle steamer which is preserved and run by a dedicated group of enthusiasts from around Glasgow.

The " Waverly " is the very last of the steamers which used to ply their trade up and down the river Clyde. Today there is very little in the way of river traffic, but in times gone by there were at least eight to ten of these passenger and cargo boats which served all the little towns along the furthest reaches of our famous river.

As a child, I used to go on holiday to Taighnabruaich ( a literal translation of which is : the house on the hill ). Our family would get up at dawn, take a taxi to the Broomielaw ( the quay in cental Glasgow ) and board one of the steamers. What followed was an adventure in itself. It would take all day to wind down the river to our destination. The boat would call in at the piers of all the little towns on the way to Taighnabruaich ( tin-a-broo-ach ) and holiday-makers would get on and off by the hundreds.

Before the ship reached the part of the river where it broadened out to the Firth of Clyde ( Clyde Estuary ), we passed all the famous shipyards where ships like " The Queen Mary" , " The Queen Elizabeth" and " The Hood" had been built. The noise and activity from these shipyards was fantastic. A thousand bees buzzing to build a hive. The sparks of the welders and the hammering of the platemakers reminding us what we were leaving.

Soon, the boat would enter more peaceful waters and the green hills would welcome us to another time zone, at least fifty years in the past.

No tv...the signal didn't come this far. Brown, peaty water which made the tea taste funny. Strange accents whch reminded us that these people spoke a lot of Gaelic when the holiday season was over. Bobbing small boats and yachts, and funny wee cottages and grand Victorian villas which had seen better days.

Then, two, three or four weeks of pure adventure : boats, hills, sea-fishing and the once a week movie show at the local hotel's ballroom. Magic.

The Gerry Owen......7th Cav...........much better that is subject that would be talked about for years.
The Battle of the Little Big Horn was not the way the Army had planned it thats for sure.
There was a another movie i saw about this a few weeks ago called "Son of the Morning Star" 1991 with Gary Cole.
Gary Cole plays Gen. George Armstrong Custer. He brings to life the conceit and arrogance of a man who felt that his way was the only way. Cole's unique facial expressions are perfect in every scene, even those where he is completely silent.
This ABC mini-series has the production quality of a big budget theatrical film. The location filming enhances the story and the use of Native American actors is great.
"Son of the Morning Star" is highly recommend movie.
Son of the Morning Star is a 1984 book, a 1991 tv mini-series film based on the book, and a 2007 feature film also based on the book. It chronicles the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Rumors of the big screen version, to be directed by Oliver Stone, have circulated.

George Preddy was......Just the greatest fighter pilot who ever squinted through a gunsight.
He was a complete fighter pilot.......Colonel John C. Meyer Deputy Commander of the 352nd.

STARMAN

Dear Starman,

in my opinion, the best and most entertaining movie which deals with the events surrounding Custer's Last Stand is " Little Big Man " starring Dustin Hoffman. This iconic movie, now largely forgotten and ignored by critics, is the only movie which treats Custer's overwhelming self-confidence and his arrogance and ignorance as a joke. This is because it was the first movie to give its audience a perspective from the Plains Indian's point of view.

It hit a few nerves when it was first released; it continues to do so.

If you have never seen this version of the story ( which dominates the later half of the movie because it gives you the story of Hoffman's character, Little Big Man, being brought up as a Native American by adoption in the first half ) try to catch it. It is well worth a view, and comes from a period in American Film History which can be considered as one of the finest.

If you wanna forget the realities and go for the myths, watch " They Died With Their Boots On", one of Errol Flynn's greatest movies. It is pure fun. It tries to tell Custer's story as if he was the greatest, most humane, brilliant tactician in military history.

When you are 10, and sitting in a darkened movie palace on a wet afternoon, this is definately the version of the story you would most like to see. The movie is in black and white, and so are the heroes and villains.
