Re: 300

I'm apprehensive.

The actual story of both the Spartan society and the Battle of Thermopylae are fantastic ones. I cringe at the thought of what Hollywood will do with this though.
The Battle of Thermopylae is a more interesting and more intricate story than is often recounted full of tragedy, heroics, and betrayal.

I'm afraid of 300 Spartans vs. 10,000 Persians & a love story.
these numbers are often used but are misleading.

Re: 300

I read a rave review about this movie in the weekend " Times ". It was inspired by a comic book and apparently it follows the structure of the comic novel panel by panel.

The reviewer was excited by the actors' portrayal of the charaters, particularly the Scottish actor, Gerard Butler, who plays Leonidas. The style of representation is drawn from the graphics of the comic book, drawn by Frank Millar of " Sin City " fame.

The film's CGI backgrounds appear to represent an arcadian, golden past which seem to the viewer to be like an oil painting.

The simple story of courage and determination should be perfect for a movie. Much more personal than " Troy" or " Alexander", two recent attempts to revive the sword and sandals epic.

Missing from the movie are the more objectionable aspects of Spartan male society. I will reserve judgement till I have seen it, but I suspect that the leading actors will not be represented as gay, blood-drinking, helot-murdering killing machines.

I wonder what spin the movie will give to the martial society in this movie. I can't wait to find out.

Yeah, the armored giant "battle rhinoceroses" in the trailer don't bode well in my opinion.

It might still be good entertainment, though, even if historically very inaccurate. I'll definitely want to see it and judge for myself.

But I remember what a disaster of a movie Oliver Stone's "Alexander" was.

Re: 300

I'm really stoked about this flick, yeah Hollywood will take their liberties (as did the graphic novel by Miller) with the actual events, but I'm willing to let that go for the sake of entertainment. Historically accurate movies don't sell at the box offices, and what the heck, I can use a break from reality for a couple of hours!
