Re: 300

If we are talking about the Greek people I shall have my say,

I have travelled around Greece and its many islands. I go back there as often as I can. The general rule is that where Greek is spoken then you can be sure of a great time.
In my experience the Greeks are open honest friendly and lots of fun. Family always comes first and they can be loud and boisterous to say the least.
They are quick to anger but equally quick to make up and be friends. they are a generous proud giving people and will always step in and help some one in difficulty.
Over the last 30 years or so Greece has become a second home to me and would say to everyone go there if you can ,you will be welcomed and made to feel special.

I agree that the Greeks are open, outgoing and friendly. I have been to Greece, including the assorted isles, many times and long to return.

On one trip in particular, we hired a taxi to take us from Athens to Delphi and our driver stopped at several places off the beaten path and patronized exclusively by "locals". Best trip of my life. We got to see the real Greece, as opposed to the aspect usually seen by tourists.

However, I may be partial. I married a Cuban-American whose roots are in Spain, and her family and friends share many of the same qualities as those you have listed for the Greeks. It must be a Mediterranean thing. Hot blooded and all that!

Re: 300

Not that the Forum Brass needs me to defend them, but...

I have to say that the admins/mods of this forum are very laid back. I belong to a couple of forums where the admins/mods are strung so tight that they will ban members for sneezing the wrong way. I appreciate their leniency.

Must just be me then.....about one in three of my posts get deleted.........English sense of humour does not make it across the pond......Though Mr Skunky seems to have the hang of it!
Viva la Skunk.......

Hot blooded ! you betcha. I have had many an amusing time watching a Greek wife berate her husband. Very funny for me but not so much for the poor Greek husband.
I called into a small village in Crete and asked the local cafe owner if there was a bank nearby. Sorry no bank he replied but come, sit down and have a glass of wine with me you look hot and tired. Sorry said I but that is why I want a Bank. I have run out of money and I need to get some so that we can have some food. Oh dont worry about money he said, eat what you like and pay me later. I laughed and said I would not be back until next year. No problem pay me then he said.
I and the other 4 in the party ate a hearty meal and went on our way. That evening I managed to get some cash at the hotel and made a special trip back to the cafe and paid the man plus a very large tip. I cannot imagine any cafe owner in the UK being so trusting. Maybe thats a sad reflection on the UK.

Sorry Harry , .......I find MH2 too restrictive and regimentive, which spoils some otherwise cracking reads.........

I see your point Lofty its not easy to know where to draw the line. English humour can be very insulting sometimes and although we understand that its not personal people outside the UK not used to this sort of humour can easily take offence.
In the UK we do tend to make fun of authority whereas elswhere people are more respectfull. Its a difficult area and the moderators try to nip possible disruptive posts in the bud.
Also adult humour is a difficult one to deal with. I take the Moderators point when they say that children could be reading the posts so it is always in the back of my mind when I write posts.
I can see both sides of the problem and sometimes wonder why a post was deleted.
Mos outburst about 4x4s is a good example of a post that was deleted because of the Englishness of the topic. In the UK we have great fun pulling 4x4 owners down and they have great fun poking back, but in America 4x4s are a way of life with some people and they take it very personally if some one has a go at them. The situation begins to get heated and then Boom theres hell to pay.

Lofty you have entertained me many times with your posts and I hope you will keep on being sharp and erudite. Dont get upset over a few deleted posts old boy.

God Bless America.

Nah...I'm not easily offended. I think the mods and admins just feel the need to NOT let things get out of hand, that's all. Things can get a bit dicey when politics and religion are being discussed.

Believe me, there are forums that are moderated with a much heavier hand than this one.

Cheers....

Re: 300

Well shucks!! My comments on the Greek Military members I've trained or worked with were not designed to insult the whole nation. MoMo wanted the Spartans to return his people. I had to inform him that from a purely military view point, he was better off sending in some Boy / Girl Scout Troop.
I'm sure the Greeks are a friendly people, as are most when it really matters. I can tell stories of British, German, Belgian, those from Luxemburg, Danes, Saudis, Egyptians, Isrealis, South Koreans and Japanese citizens that have helped me in my travels and military adventures. Sometimes when slightly intoxicated.
