Re: 300

Reading between the lines of this thread, I can safely assume that '300' will not be anything like ' The 300 Spartans' ( of which I posted a review on the ' Movies and Models....' thread ).

I dare say that I will enjoy the movie when I see it because I won't be expecting anything more than a replication of Frank Millar's vision of the story ( I hope that it isn't too much like his comic books because I consider them to be vastly over-rated. I can't appreciate his story-telling, and I think that the graphics/draftsmanship in the comic books is inferior).

It's too bad that the truth, always much stranger and more fascinating than fiction, has to be sifted through a sieve which filters out the facts; and then is mixed with palliative techno-fantasy game sprites to satiate a teenage audience reared on computer conflict and the quest to activate a few brain cells.

This is what market research and the mission to hit a target audience brings to the movies.

Re: 300

I heard it was banned in Iran because their leader Amajab thought it protrayed Arabs badly.

Will go to the IMAX this weekend.

Come on, Gambit, the Persians get shown up by a few Greeks! Not one of their glory moments. This is from Amajab, who took delight in sponsoring an exhibition to see who could produce the best cartoon depicting The Holocaust!

How could Aquavelvajob or Amad-jihad... or whatever the hell you call that Hitler from the Middle East even be up in arms about the portrayal of Arabs in that film?
This films mocks them? I don't think so. Their prophet muhamed wasn't even born at the time the Greeks were fighting King Xerxis.

Re: 300

It was reported that:

"Iranians were clearly offended at the way their ancestors were portrayed in the film, inspired by the tale of 300 Spartans under King Leonidas who held out at Thermopylae against a Persian invasion led by Xerxes in 480 BC. The government, lawmakers and Iranian Web logs (blogs) denounced the movie, which depicts the huge Persian army as ruthless but repeatedly outsmarted by the Greeks who are only defeated in the end by treachery."

Anyway I'am looking forward to going.

Re: 300

I dont know about Amajab but how would you feel if a movie depicted your country litteraly as an army of bloodthirsty demons?

The story is true, Xerxes is like Alexander the great or Napoleon or cesar or any other expansionist ruler he wanted more territory (and convert people to monotheism, preferably Zoroastrian religion).

He got stopped by a handfull of greeks for 3 days and then he invaded a great amount of greece including athens. until 9 months later when he was pushed back home by the greeks.

Well, actually, for the US that happens all the time all over the world, including in Hollywood. The United States is VERY OFTEN depicted in very unfavorable terms, and I'm not talking about events from 2500 years ago (granted, that would be tough for the US...) or even 100 years. And it's usually done in much more realistic terms than what "300" does. Yet somehow, neither the US government nor its citizens seem to have a cow about it. Go figure...

Re: 300

I'm not saying I agree with baning movies. I'm just saying you cannot blame them for not being keen on the movie.

OK. I thought we were talking about the movie being banned by the Iranian government, not simply about peoples' propensity or desire to go see the movie or not. The second one is very different than the first.

Sorry if I missunderstood.

Re: 300

Calm down, Guys!

as I stated before, the criticism heaped on '300' by Iranian commentators is perhaps prompted by a desire to impress Amajab. Any pronouncements which HE makes are sure to curdle your buttermilk. This is the man, who I pointed out before, sponsored the disgusting exhibition of cartoons from the diaspora of Global Anti-Semitism which sought to depict The Holocaust as an event to be ridiculed and made into a joke.

Don't take anything which this looney says seriously. His intent is to create dissention, and to provoke the 'Agents of Satan' ( the west ) into reacting strongly about his pronouncements. His long term intention is to position himself as the leader of the Islamic peoples.

The more you throw brickbats at him, the stronger his position becomes. If he wants to align himself with Xerxes and his hordes, then let him. More fool him! Xerxes lost, and the forces of a crude form of democracy prevailed.
