Re: 300

Saw it again and this time in an IMAX theater last weekend and it still ROCKS! The movie continues to be very profitable for the makers, thanks to audiences like us.

Re: 300

I'm apprehensive.

The actual story of both the Spartan society and the Battle of Thermopylae are fantastic ones. I cringe at the thought of what Hollywood will do with this though.
The Battle of Thermopylae is a more interesting and more intricate story than is often recounted full of tragedy, heroics, and betrayal.

I'm afraid of 300 Spartans vs. 10,000 Persians & a love story.
these numbers are often used but are misleading.

Hi Admin,
I agree with your comments, I recently read the account of the battle written by good old Herodotus, a very amusing chap indeed.
His stories and observations are as relevant today as they were back then. He states that at least 250,000 men were involved!!!!!!!
I think perhaps he got that slightly wrong.

Atop the graves of the Spartens was written,

Go tell the Spartans, thou that passest here,
That here obedient to their words we lie.

They were a very complex civilisation and not just a militaristic rigid society historians would have us believe.

I am tempted to go and see this film although I will have to suspend my beliefs while watching.
Is it to be another Troy????

BTW, I think Skunky would have made a good Helot.

God Bless America.

Re: 300

I worked on the set of that movie,
It was very impressive.
I still have not seen it though
I had read a history book about this event and all the time I was working there, with the giant and the demon ninjas I wished they would have stuck to historically acurate. I still think its going to be a great entertainment and amazing images.

cant wait to see it.

Re: 300

300 was very entertaining, but the "over-the-top" monsters, reminiscent of the ones in the "Lord of the Ring" trilogy, detracted rather than enhanced the movie. I didn't go in there expecting history. In fact, as it turns out, there were a lot more historical referrences than I thought there would be, but the giant humans (?), elephants, etc... and "predator" look-alike ninjas/immortals are definitely a case of " more is not always better." Why did they have to make Xerxes 10 ft tall (literally)?

Just my opinion. I still recommend the movie, but can only give it 4 stars versus 5 because of the above.

Re: 300

You have to remember that the movie is based on a comic book mini-series/graphic novel by Frank Miller. If you look at the film as an adaptation of that, it reproduced his storytelling style, both visually and literally, almost to a t. The monsters, exaggerated physiology, et al. were in that book, and appeared very similar in in the movie to how they appeared in print. The makers of the movie were obviously trying to remain as faithful to the original work as possible.

I thought it was really good.

That's an excellent point. Not all of us are familiar with the graphic novel the movie is based on, so that' was a factor in my assessment. But if you come at it from that viewpoint, I suppose the movie is a five-out-of-five star movie.

OH, and there was me thinking this was a movie about the Spartans and it turns out to be a comic strip thingy.

However I think I shall go and see it , well you chaps liked it so it must have some merit.

Tisk I really should get out more then I might keep up on these things.

Well, Jim, the movie still touches on timeless themes like human courage, betrayal, loyalty, freedom, love, etc... My personal opinion is that these themes are in general better treated when set in more realistic terms (for example, I liked "Gladiator" a lot more than "300" for this reason, even though it is only loosely based on history). But science-fiction, fantasy, even fairy tales (all genres which suspend reality to various degrees) can be very powerful as well.

If you go see "300" with the same expectation than if you were going to see "Lord of the Ring," let's say, you'll be OK. You just need to completely forget the idea that this movie might be about the Spartans in any historical sense.
