Hi Lens,
I believe there are a lot more layouts the world over that are great examples of what a guy can achieve in spare time. I've been working on my layout almost 20 years. I tried to be in groups but, I hate guys that pick on ones work as a way to ease their Jealousy over not building their own! These layouts we have are triple in price from what we began with. We had to insure all of our collections for fire/theft. I've been working on a switching yard intermodal as one don't see many box cars these days. The yard is capable of holding 250 Nscale cars. For me it's just Clean fun!
