Re: Poll Positions

The most prevalent versions are fine for me now - straight wingers.

Yes, I'll go with that. I'll save the swept wingers for a future list. I have a feeling that once this poll is underway, this process may have to be renewed yearly as we get our wishes granted/denied.

Wink Re: Poll Positions

HA! Now who's complicating things? Seriously, though, it's a great list. I like that SR-71 inclusion. But, I'll stick with my original short list (for now). I don't want to overwhelm whoever's going to be sifting thru the initial write-ins!

Re: Poll Positions

While we wait for management to chime in, I would like to offer some additional thoughts. First, as to scales, I suggest that we stick to 1:72 and 1:48 to begin with. My reasons are these. Any list of most wanted 1:32 scale planes is almost certain to be almost totally duplicated by the 1:48 list, hence it will be largely redundant. As for 1:144, because of the size limitations only a score of planes from all eras are big enough to be done in this scale with any hope of marketing them. Regarding candidate lists, I think we are agreed that we can't give members huge rosters of planes--many of which they aren't familiar with-- to consider. With this in mind, the committee could come up with an initial selection of 10-30 planes for each era and "bounce it off " the membership with the invitation to add or delete from the list via write-ins. We might also list those planes--such as the P-39-- which are in the works, hence not to be included. Without a carefully considered starting list to evaluate, I am concerned that many planes that deserve consideration and might be good sellers would be ignored. For example on the several WWII lists already posted on this thread one could easily add the MC-202, SM-79, Oscar,Tony, Frank, ME-410, P-36, Hudson and many others that members might wish to be rendered in diecast. Also, we must be clear about our definitions. If we count the planes marketed by IXO as "already done", this compromises the WWII portion of the poll for 1:72 scale planes. I think that most of us would like to see much better versions of the MC-202, I-16, Yak-3, F2A, etc. made by quality conscious manufacturers.

Re: Poll Positions

I think we are really on to something here! I agree with you Epap. IXO, Matchbox, FOV, and Model Power need not apply.

Well, these are valid points. All the initial write-in lists are intended to do is to give a guide to the poll committee as to which airplanes seem to be the most popular ones to start the poll with. I'm thinking that if we knock out the write-in stuff up front, before the poll gets officially kicked off, we may achieve our stated desire to keep the actual poll itself simple.

Well, 1/144th would work if some large planes keep emerging on candidate lists, and ultimately make it onto the poll. Corgi has quite a range of nice 1/144th planes already, mainly aircraft that may be too big (or too expensive) to justify doing in a larger scale. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see some other big planes come out in 1/72nd (imagine a 1/72nd C-5...Yeeaahhh!). I have fond memories building the Monogram B-52D years and years ago. But, given the prices on some of the 1/72nd big planes that are already out, I can only imagine what a 1/72nd diecast B-52 would retail for...
Again, thats assuming any of the larger planes make it onto the candidate list in the poll. If not, then 1/144th is a moot point...

Re: Poll Positions

Judging by the number of views this thread is garnering, there seems to be a lot of interest in the idea of this poll , which, basically, is to offer manufacturers useful inputs in making their decisions about new models to bring to market. I think that we have presented the concept and refined it somewhat, but now find ourselves in a holding position. Some people are already submitting wish lists, which is, to say the least, premature. I think that we need to wait for a management response before raising false hopes for without its input, guidance and programming/tallying help were are not going to get very far. I like the idea, as you can tell by my posts, however we must to remember that the poll --in whatever form it ultimately takes-- must present choices that are reasonable from a manufacturer's business viewpoint. That doesn't mean that we can't stray from the usual suspects---P-40s, Spitfires, etc. But there's little point asking them to make planes that saw little action, never went beyond the prototype stage and so on. Somehow, the poll needs to winnow out the unrealistic requests,so manufacturers take it seriously. Also, we need a mechanism to encourage a lot of voting, not merely a poll dominated by a small hard core of dedicated fans of particular planes, scales and eras. I remain optimistic, but the project needs to get organized before deliberating further.
