Re: Daytona 500

I love the guy that crossed the finish line on his roof!

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: Daytona 500

I'm sick of NASCAR rules. I'm glad Harvick won but to me Martin got screwed to some extent. A few years ago on the last lap they threw a yellow flag at Talledega and the scoring froze and gave Jeff Gordon the lead and obviously the win. To me they should have done the same here they had plenty of time to throw a yellow. They're making NASCAR too much of a tv show instead of a race. I understand they're trying to make it good for the fans but I get sick of the rules changing.

Yeah, I don't think Martin was happy about it. He started to say something in his post race interview, but then he didn't finish it.

Re: Daytona 500

Racing is not about the fans anymore, it is about big business. I am an old fart and can remember when you could tell the car manufacturer from a distance and all they had on them was a number. What fan wants to watch 42 identical cars (other then the decal that says Ford, Chevy, etc) run around the track. Go back and look at the old Super Birds and Chevies with square roof lines, the big assed Fords. Those were cars and drivers that you could identify with.

Re: Daytona 500

Now you are talking Bill. Remember that Dodge built the Charger Daytona,, adn got in trouble over it. Usually a company took a car in stock production and turned it into a race car. Dodge did the opposire with the 1969 Daytona. They built a race car and turned it into a stock production car that could do 180 mph right out of the showroom! 426 hemi powered and a real sight with the pointed front end, and the high wing on the back. Rihard Petty drove both that and a Superbird that looked great with his paint scheme on them.

Re: Daytona 500

I have been a Nascar fan all my life and my father liked Richard Petty during his racing days.
But when i was a little i saw one of them Dodge Superbirds and thought WOW that thing must fly
I still remember CBS showing the first Daytona 500 on tv and seeing that big fight down by turn 3 and 4 at the end.. Now thats racing back in the days. Now it seems to be too controlled and not as fun as i remember when the man in black drove that #3.
Don't get me wrong i love Nascar racing but it's just not the same anymore..
Is it just me that thinks that way or are there others that feel the same as i do?

Re: Daytona 500

Dear Starman,

All big league motor racing is about $$$$s on wheels. Every so-called sport isn't about sport, it's about $$$$$s

There is an element of skill involved in all man ( or woman ) + machine events, but if you have the sponsorship of the Buckets O' Money Corp. you just have to press the pedals and let the technology do the business. The rest is TV hype + disturbing and unsettling noises. The poor commentators have little to say about what is really happening, so they tell you a lot of crap about how:

" This man used to use a unicycle to wheel himself to school before he discovered the power of the car pedal. "

" Ho, ho, Jake, I bet that was a big surprise for him! "

" Yes, Pete, he's got four wheels now and, boy, he sure knows how to use them!"

" I heard his dad used to take him to........" ad infinitum.....

Driving isn't a sport, it's what you do to get from A to B.

The good ol' days ain't what they used to be...

No argument here.....

The "Car of Tomorrow" which is debuting at Bristol is the real capper in my filthy opinion. I wish they'd go back to basics, or at least stop calling it "stock car racing"..

Re: Daytona 500

Problem is that no one makes a stock car that could even comeclose to holding up in a race any more.

There is a Speed GT and Touring Car championship were cars are based on real deal, at least shape-wise with opening doors. The Australian V8Supercars are probably the most competitive road racing series out there with body shells coming from Ford and GM (Holden) of Australia.

Here are pics of 1:18 model of Australian Ford V8 Supercar from my collection:

The issue with NASCAR is that it's completely irrelevant from manufacturers point of view. If for example, GM, Ford, Chrysler will pull out and Kia, Huyndai, or VW will come on board, the racing team themselves will just have to replace stickers, and that's about it
