I'm trying really hard to think happy thoughts!!!

Due to my neighbors uncontrolled child/animal running around acting foolish in my office and knocking my computer on it's side I have just lost my 72,000+ aviation image collection that I have been putting together over the last eight years. The 500GB drive that it resided on now sounds like a weed eater and a recovery effort looks hopeless. My neighbor has offered to pay for a new drive, but unfortunately the time and effort put into searching, scanning, and downloading can not be replaced.

I can't help but visualize beating this child much like Arnold Schwarzenegger visualized breaking the car salesman's nose while test driving a Corvette in the movie "True Lies".

Oh Boy.....Sorry for your loss....But what in the world are you doing with a wild child in your house ?
That means all the nice pictures you posted are MIA....You should be able to retrieve your data.....Now you need to put your house in Lock-Down when that Wild Child comes back over...

Check with a local computer geek shop.
No matter how it sounds to you, your data will be recoverable.
Get the neighbour to spring for that cost, and keep his kid the hell away from your models and computer.

Sorry to hear your loss, but anything you have on that hard drive should still be 'recoverable'. So, don't worry...be happy.

Sounds like such a charming youngster to have visit. But smartd is right, try the local computer geeks. They'll be able to retrieve your data and maybe even load it on a new drive. Good luck.

Re: I'm trying really hard to think happy thoughts!!!

The problem with the drive is that it's not even being recognized by the internal data bus, so it would probably require my sending it off to a lab. There is a place in North Carolina that I've used before but it costs a minimum of $300. If I could only see the drive on my computer I could probably recover a lot of files even with the file system in disarray. I have a program called "Easy Recovery Pro" by Kroll Ontract Inc. and it does wonders for file recovery. I've used it on twice formated drives and recovered data, but this is not just a logical problem it's also physical, and that's where it gets real difficult to recover data.

I'll probably just start over.

Oh, and I'll be installing a lock on my office door today.

To a man of your experience, this might be blindingly obvious, but have you tried checking all the cable connections are in tight. There probably are other problems with said drive, but a tumble could have knocked something loose.

Ooops!
