Re: I'm trying really hard to think happy thoughts!!!

I had started to back it up to DVD once but I had some trouble burning and I did'nt have time to fool with it so I put it off. Ooops

72000 shots - Depending on image size, that could be be quite a few DVD's.

I've tried to manage my personal family photo's with Adobe Album. The product might have changed names now as it's 4 or 5 years old and V2, but it lets you easily create catalog backups straight to your DVD/CD burner and will manage the whole process. Also records where the last full backup left off and in the future will let you do incrementally from that point. Tells you how many disc's it's going to take as well.

If my PC went bye/bye, I think the Photo's are the only thing on there worth saving - everything else is disposable.

Ooops!

Yep, about 30 DVDs. You can see why I'd found it easy to procrastinate.

I've been using Google's Picasa and it's worked pretty well for me.

Man, what a bummer! Even if you had the time to go back and download all those images again, would you even remember all the sites you obtained them from?

To a man of your experience, this might be blindingly obvious, but have you tried checking all the cable connections are in tight. There probably are other problems with said drive, but a tumble could have knocked something loose.

Yeah, look for anything obvious like the man says!

Re: I'm trying really hard to think happy thoughts!!!

Hi Admin, I really feel your pain on this one. It happened to me once, I lost a load of invoices and supplier details.
I took the computor to a local place and they managed to retrieve most of the stuff although it cost me about £100.
The computor went in the trash can and from that day I always backed everything up at least once a week.

It took me days of hard work to load all that stuff into a new computor, I didnt dare do a download in case I downloaded the gremlins that caused the problem in the first place, even though the computor guy said it was a system fail and not a virus I didnt want to take any risks.

I have never liked computors and mostly they drive me mad, I am more of a spanner n hammer man myself , but then without my computor I wouldn't be able able to chat with all the cool guys on the forum so I suppose its not so bad after all.

God Bless America.

Re: I'm trying really hard to think happy thoughts!!!

that hurts! I've had some head crashed harddisks over the years...

Hm, let me see... Was the computer running as it got knocked over? When not running HDD can take up to 35g's of punishment. So in this case its a loose connector either on the Motherboard or with the drive-

If it was running, d'uh! Then its probable a head-crash (the tiny head which rotates over the platters hit the platters causing a scratch in the material).

In this case not all data should be lost. But a bit pricey to get to it.

Well, I hope this is of any help. Remote tec-support is always a biatch.

Wow Gavin, that is unfortunate...
Hopefully, you can retrieve the data and be able to save your collection..

Dear Gavin,

sorry for your loss, but as Jim says, the geeks can recover just about anything which is in digital form.

Also, get a really big pit bull terrier, and a few man-traps, and invite the offending child to inspect them ! ( I take it that he's called Damien ).

cheer-up,

MoMo
