6 foot long Elco 80' PT Boat model

Hey folks I just picked up this beautiful model made of a good hard wood. It just needs some running gear and will terrorize the local duck and turtle populations as well as turn alot of heads at the lakes. This thing is 74" long and weighs at least 30 pounds. Are any of you knowledgeable about r/c boats or r/c motors and speed controls? I need some good sound advice. I do not want to buy all that stuff twice. Any advice, thoughts, or direction would be most appreciated! My diecast budget is shot to hell that's for sure but who could resist right?

VERY nice.

I've got a 1/18 scale Swift boat. I haven't even started on getting it ready for the pool yet, so I know the kind of challenges you're looking at.

Did it come complete, or did you have to build it?

Re: 6 foot long Elco 80' PT Boat model

Thanks guys. This was scratch built from the real PT 109 plans supposedly. The builder got the plans years ago from a guy in British Columbia. I saw the plans they are big as bed sheets. My main questions are:

1) What sized electric brushless motors and best brand
2) Should it be directdrive or use a gearbox( I am getting different opinions)

Astroflight 40's and Novak 550's have been recommended on the motors.

Re: 6 foot long Elco 80' PT Boat model

I am placing a sound module in the boat that will recreate the actual sounds of a PT boat and will increase and decrease as the boat throttles up and back. I have seen this and it is mind blowingly realistic. Many years of enjoyment ahead if I can finance all the workings.........
