Duel To The Death?: Pick Your Mount.

Let's set the scene. You and your arch rival--someone you really hate--are both skilled pilots of WWII fighter planes. The two of you have been kidnapped by a mad scientist and taken to a mysterious island. He's pitting you and your nemesis in do or die air combat at a height of 20,000-30,000 feet using perfectly restored and armed WWII fighter planes. Your opponent has won the coin toss and picked the P-51D as his mount. Now it's your turn to choose. Select your plane from this list: F4U-1A, F6F-5, P-40N, P-47D, Spitfire XIV, Tempest V, LA-7, Yak-9, BF-109K, FW-190A-8, FW-190D-9, KI-84, KI-100, MC-205, Fiat G-55. By the way, don't think that you can escape by flying away. Both planes are rigged with bombs set to explode if they stray more than 20 miles from the mad scientist's island.

Talking Re: Duel To The Death?: Pick Your Mount.

I reckon it's a tough call. For me its between the Spitfire Mk. XIV and the Fw 190D9, maybe even the Tempest Mk. V. I'd go with the Spitfire Mk. XIV, that should do the trick, more power, firepower and it should out turn the P51 (I hope).

Re: Duel To The Death?: Pick Your Mount.

P-47D all the way. It could take lots of hits and had lots of ammo. and firepower. Of course, my first move would be to dive my Jug to 5,000 feet, since it was not so great at the higher altitudes. So if my enemy wants to come down below 10,000 feet to take me on, then LET HIM TRY! Mwuuhhaaaaaaa-haa-haaaa!

Re: Duel To The Death?: Pick Your Mount.

Since it was proven that the Ki-84 was superior to most allied fighters (including the P-51), I'll be the oddball and go for the Frank.. My other choice would be the Fw190D-9..

Re: Duel To The Death?: Pick Your Mount.

GROAN, you would choose a P51D and 20/30 thousand feet. Thats a tough one. That Mustang is just so fast and turns really well.
OK after much thought I think the Tempest.
Two reasons, first the Tempest has a better top speed and second it can out dive the Mustang.
This I hope gives the the edge, I can disengage and re engage at will, I hope. The Tempest turns well but not as good as the Mustang, Tactics would have to be high speed passes and dive away then come around again.

Can we drop down to 18,000 feet then I could roll out the P40, that can match the Mustang on fire power and can just out turn the Stang, plus its built like a battleship.
Tactics in that bird would be snap roll and turn into the Stang, it worked great against the 109s. (wouldn't try that against a Zero).

Just had a thought, can I have an ejector seat fitted please I think I may need it. (now which pair of spectacles should I wear)?

God Bless America.

Re: Duel To The Death?: Pick Your Mount.

Well, a few thing should be pointed out with regards to your starting parameters.

What attitude to we start in? Neutral? Head to head? Tail to tail?

Just because we start at 20-30K doesn't mean we stay there.

The Yak-3 was in fact more advanced than the Yak-9, so I'd like to take that if I could, even though the Yak (neither one) couldn't make it above 20K do to lack of supercharger. Judging purely by my online flightsim stick time, the Stang has an advantage in speed and firepower, but most come to the merge with too much smash, allowing me to force them into an overshoot. If the opponent is good (or more properly, better than I am), they would just wait for me to become a fuel mort.

Indecision is the key to flexibilty.
Flexibility is the key to airpower.
Indecision is therefore the key to Airpower.
