Last week I had the chance to interview Bud for the museum magazine. I talked to him for like an hour! It was so great to have the chance to do that. He told me several awsome stories, including the one about his ground crew removing the paint form the aircraft for him. He was a true gentleman, and really great all around. He even personalized a copy of To Fly and Fight for me.

Good for you MD talking to Bud Anderson is always fun.
I have a signed copy of "To fly and Fight" as well and it's a great book to read.

I heard that they removed the paint overnight when usually it took a week or two - is this true?

Yes they did, I have a video about Bud. Bud had tears in his eyes as he related the story. What a guy.

He got the same way telling me the story. He said that he told them very casually that the next time Old Crow came in for heavy work, to do it. The next day he walked over to his parking area, and ther sat his ship in polished metal. His crew standing there with bloody and raw hands form the gas and what ever else they used to get the paint off. He said those poor guys never got the credit the deserved. No one knows who Gabreski's crew chief was. That is what he told me. It was a very moving story to have him tell it.
