Re: Pieces of ramp or runways form WWII bases

I have some Taconite pellets (iron ore) from the Edmund Fitzgerald which sank in Lake Superior in 1975. Also have some small rocks from the wreck site. I was on expedition with HMCS Cormorant in 1995 to recover the ship's bell. Our submersible's skids picked up some of the debris. It was not removed intentionally. Makes an interesting memento along with other Canadian Navy bits'n'bobs.

Re: Pieces of ramp or runways form WWII bases

Skunky, you miss MD's point. He is following in the footsteps of the guy in one of the MASH episodes (was it Rizzo?) that was going to swallow pieces of a jeep so he could smuggle it back home and re-assemble it.

MD wants his own WWII base.... piece by piece.

No, but you're not entirely incorrect.Klinger was actually "eating" a jeep to prove he was crazy. Rizzo was MAILING his wife jeep parts to re-asemble back home.

Re: Pieces of ramp or runways form WWII bases

There are plenty of old war time airfields over here too (Northern Ireland), next time i've a weekend free I'll go snooping and see what I can find. I've a book somewhere listing all the war time airfields somewhere and alot of them where US bases too, I think at the height of the war alot of US & Canadian where stationed here.

Best of luck with your collection!

Flying boat. Is this a Stranraer?

Yeah, it's a Supermarine Stranraer of No.240 Sqdn, They were replaced by Catalina's in April 1941 ( ish ! = top of my head)

& to those 'Stateside' who've never seen such a 'Graceful Beauty', YES IT WAS MADE BY THE Co. WHO BUILT THE SPITFIRE !!!!!!

There's a Stranraer (in N.M.F.) at (the) RAF Museum, in N.W. London

Matchbox done a (decent) 1/72nd scale injection moulded Plastic-Kit, of a 240 Sqdn Stranraer !!!!!!!!!

(they command a 'fair' amount of money, at kit fairs !)

Just noticed, looking at the photo again........ That's a Rare shot ! (Chronological-Wise)

It's THE 1st, & only time, I've EVER seen a Stranraer marked up with the 'Later' = 'C.1' type fuselage roundel !!!!!!!!!

Most (if any), show the 'earlier' 'A.1' type - with the..... Broad Yellow-outer, Broad White middle & smaller (inner) Red-Circle, as worn by RAF a/c in the early war years !

Re: Pieces of ramp or runways form WWII bases

Thanks again for all of the great replies. I can't wait. I am going to do a great display with these objects.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

No! You're both wrong. It was Radar who was mailing a jeep back home, bit by bit. ( about Series 3 ? )

Hornchurch, you've gotta get out more, or you're going to end up like Rimmer in Red Dwarf!

( glad that the pic widened your knowledge and made your day! )

cheers,

MoMo

btw, the pic is on the cover of a booklet which I've posted the cover of on one of the first posts on this thread. It's easy enough to do a search under " Stranraer " and track it down

Re: Pieces of ramp or runways form WWII bases

I'm back from our overnight trip to Stranraer. It rained sheets and sheets when we were there, so I couldn't search out a good, representative chunk of history for you, Mustangdriver, but we'll be back again in two weeks, so I'll find something then.

Cheers,

MoMo
