The story reminds me of something that happened in 1970. I was in the Mediterranean on the flying bridge of a Navy jet fuel tanker when I noticed something bobbing in the water ahead. We must have been doing about 30 knots. It was a floating contact mine that went past the length of our hull not more than a yard away.
