Thinkin' bout selling out..

Hey guys-

I've been collecting these things for about 2 years now..

However, I haven't bought a single airplane in almost a year of that time..

I am not sure if I just don't care anymore or what the deal is..

I think the largest reason is I currently do not have anywhere to display them.. They are ALL in their boxes.. Just sitting.. That combined with the non-collecting as of late, has me thinking about selling off about 95% of the stock I have accumulated..

Not real sure why I'm even posting this.. Perhaps it is a "help me" post..

Maybe not.. Anyway, I'm going to go through the models tonight and see what I've got, what I want to sell and what not..

I'll list them here first.. then off to eVil bay me thinks..

Jeff

Re: Thinkin' bout selling out..

Well, sounds like you've only been collecting for one year... and storing for two...

See how you feel when you go through your stock and if you then want to part with 'em. I've found the trend with this hobby is to go kinda nuts at first and buy scads of stuff, some of which later may have you say "what was I thinking"... but maybe this is one of those hobbies for you that kinds of burns out and you go on to the next thing?

Nothing wrong with that, but just make sure you really want to sell before you get rid of any hard-to-find stuff you may have. Or maybe just keep that and get rid of the common stuff you can easily replace later? Getting rid of that HTF stuff, and then deciding you want back into the hobby, could be expensive ... +1 Count me in this group as well.

Re: Thinkin' bout selling out..

Tram,
Hey there.

Sounds to me like you've become disillusioned with the hobby. Do you have any of your birds on display? Have you had any on display of late? Do you have room for even one of two on your work station, or "hang-out" area at home?

If the answer is no, you don't care to have any out and nor any interest in new birds, then sell off the whole thing. One big ebay lot, set a low price to begin with and let folks bid it up, collect your dough, mail it out and be done. You'll be doing yourself a favor.

On the other hand, if you are just looking to pull out a few, or looking for an excuse to pull out a few then try what I do.

Since I'm very cramped with space I pull out a few birds at one time (Or more than a few and end up with a veritible circus. ) and spend some time with each. Strafe the cat once in a while, move them from place to place and then go out, find the boxes, put these away and dig out some more.

Every now and again, its like Christmas around here. I find a bird I haven't seen for a while, put her out and think, "Wow, why haven't I had this out all along?" Of course, at some point the cycle starts again and each time its like discovering a long lost friend.

If you are "collecting" instead of enjoying, then you are better off with long term stocks. Diecast is not the way to invest for a future retirement, or college funds for the kids. That way will merely lead to madness.

Anything for a weird life.

Re: Thinkin' bout selling out..

Here's what I'll add....

Is "doing nothing" an option?

What is the negative cost of leaving the planes boxed/stored exactly where they are now? If the answer is "nothing" - just wait. Don't sell or spend money on new purchases. (If this is an option - Why not? If - over time - your interest in the hobby returns or doesn't, you are fine. If it returns, you have everything. If it never does, then you can sell later.)

Now.....
If you are looking at stacks of boxed planes thinking....."I'll bet if I sold these, I could get.......(44" Plasma screen; etc. - purchases you may not NEED) then you just have to weigh the costs and benefits of your planes vs. your "wants." Look at long term/short term pleasure; etc.

Finally.......
If you are skipping meals because you can't afford it; missing mortgage payments; etc. , then you know what you need to do.

If they are safely stored and not in the way, just keep them. It was just within the last two years that I finally got into a house with my own study. All the accumulated models finally left their boxes and emerged into the light.

Well worth the wait.

Re: Thinkin' bout selling out..

Thanks for the replies guys..

I am still not sure what to do with them.. However, I think the driving factor right now is that I want another toy and could turn these into money..

I don't HAVE to use them, but it would take some of the wifey pressure off when I go and spend $2,500..

Re: Thinkin' bout selling out..

Naturally I don't know anything about your situation, mindset, space problems, etc. Which leads me to offer the following comment. More than any other time, we are witnessing a revolution in military diecast manufacturing----both in the quality of the products offered and the breadth of models, eras, etc. covered. Sure, some screwups still occur and we are often disappointed by poor paint jobs, bad stands, missing features, and so on. But if your initial interest in this hobby had any substance behind it, as I assume it did, then consider what you will be missing if you quit now. By all means review your collection and prune out those models you don't really want. After that step is completed, why not make a plan for your "new" collection, focusing on the scales you prefer, how you might display your planes, and, most important which ones you really wish to include. You probably have some of these already. Now the question is what to add. We often buy more than we need simply because the models become available. This leads to wasteful duplication and space problems. But if you have a plan that calls for the best you can get of, say, fifty planes, you can patiently wait until "the right" version of a plane you want to acquire appears in the marketplace. You may display half of these models in a limited but well-designed showcase or some other mode of presentation, then periodically trot out a few from storage if you get more space. Remember, less can be more-----if you run your collection, not the other way around. Anyway, do what you feel is best for you and good luck.
