Hee hee. Great minds think alike. Some of my old diecast 1/18 Ertls went to Goodwill, and I actually got a decent tax deduction for donating to a charity.... Even Goodwill turned up its nose at my Nascars. I should have tried pawning them off on tank nut..... | ||||||||||||||

| Re: Thinkin' bout selling out.. Hey man, heart to heart I wanted to say I have considered selling out many times and just finding a new hobby. I guess when money gets tight or I feel a little insecure I wonder what I am doing with all this stuff laying around. After a time I get over it perhaps a new model comes out that blows me away or I read the forum and hear all the jibber-jabber from other guys who share this passion with such enthusiasm and passion that it starts to rub off and I re-commit to enjoying a hobby, an unusual hobby, MY hobby. It is so much more than just plastic and metal models or toys it is the camaraderie you share on the forum. The love of aircraft and history and the preservation of the stories behind the people who flew and maintained them. We share world events together,we share joys and sadness as a family. We are all just guys having fun collecting and perhaps making up for lost time. At least with this hobby you have something to show. Your collection is an investment of time and money. Many things we do in life leave little behind to appreciate. If you do not have the space I understand perhaps a friend or family memeber can keep them safe until better arrangenents can be made. If you do not need the money why not sit on them and let them become more rare and collectable heck you might find your passion for model collecting can grow over time. I think if you can display a few in rotation over a period of time and really appreciate them you will change your feelings. I would ask you to consider selling off those models that do not excite you and use the money to inject some new and more interesting models into your collection. If you put some out for display I bet others not aware of your cool hobby may give you compliments and ask about the history of some of the models. This always brightens my day. I have always thought that these beautiful little models of machines belong out of the box where you can see and touch them and catch them in different light and let your imagination run wild. This is a pretty cool hobby although one that is probably less well known and appreciated by the masses but still you should not be afraid to take ownership in it and be proud. You are among friends who despite age, background, and goegraphical differences all have exactly the same thing in common with you and I dare say at times have also been faced with this same crossroad. Hang in there, follow your heart if it is really not into collecting then move on there are other things to enjoy life is short. Good luck and remember take your time feelings change like the weather. | |||||||||||||

| Re: Thinkin' bout selling out.. Hey Tram, You've been in this a while with us and it's been great to have you. If you're in to the real things then I can see how this would take a back seat for sure. I always wanted to learn to fly but now with 2 munchkins it's gonna have to wait, again. Life is long and though I don't know really how old you are or your situation, I'm telling you that interests change and housing changes....life changes. Get some kids and a home to take care of and you may find 10,000 feet to be too far away from it all. I'd say keep some of them and find another way to get the money. I coach a varsity golf team in the fall and my wife can't say boohoo about what I do with the cashola. With 250 or so models, coaching and a bigger house was a must. | |||||||||||||

| Re: Thinkin' bout selling out.. I have to say I sold a few planes I later regretted getting rid of, but my moving sale did keep me in food for my last few weeks in Maui, and it enabled me to fix the Turbo of my car, which allowed me to ship my vehicle to the continental US, and drive across the country to get my dream job. So look long and hard and figure out which ones are keepers. Personally, I'd recommend making a core of your collection, one representative of each type in each scale, depending of course on what you have. For me, my core was my Armour 1/100 planes, which could actually fit in a single suitcase...my suitcase Air Force. A couple other favorites went along in my luggage when I departed Hawaii. I went ahead and sent others ahead in the mail when I moved, irreplacable types such as my Topping Crusaders which I paid several hundred dollars for, and which I know will eventually appreciate in value. I was fortunate enough to have been able to put a large number of other models in long term storage at my family's house, which I will eventually come back to. So now my collection has virtually started afresh, and being that I'm in a locale where housing is affordable and space isn't quite at a premium, I've decided to venture back into 1/32 and 1/48, which space considerations back in Hawaii precluded. I know there's times that one regrets the cash spent on this hobby, but the way I looked at it, my models were sort of a reward system....life is so expensive these days and money flows out at such a rate that it is nice to know you are actually getting something for your hard earned cash. Plus, we all know how cool it is to have a package waiting for us at the end of a long work day. This holds true even now. As for spousal/girlfriend issues, both my former live-ins were livid about my model collection. They wanted me to spend my money on them....which to me simply became another form of prostitution. Of course, my collection was a replacement for my lack of flying, and airplanes cost so much to rent in Hawaii that I figured I was better off getting something for my money instead of remaining barely current...and therefore marginally safe up in the air. I don't regret doing anything, as I learned quite well what sort of woman is worth being with. As the late Gordon Baxter once said "my first wife didn't like to fly either." Kudos to you members whose spousel units are understanding about this hobby, even if certain purchases are required. And they certainly not toys....a 20-30-50-100 dollar depiction of a famous aircraft in my mind is a much more sensible purchase than a 500 dollar handbag, or 300 dollar shoes...or 250 for a nice dinner including tip. At least our models seem to retain some value over time, which cannot be said for most things that the ladies seem to like. I also have to say, nice RV Tram, let me know if you have her ready to do a XC to KRYY in Georgia....Aeroatlanta is the Northside Aviation part of the field, and Avgas there runs 4.25 per gal...unless you got the STC for Mogas. It's now my home away from home....I've only taken one day off since starting. Finally, I must also say thank you to all those forum members who did buy from me during my moving sale. You have helped make it possible for me to pursue my passion for aviation, and helped me towards getting my dream job. So a great big Hawaiian Mahalo (thanks) to all of you with Aloha.
