Re: "Flyboys" DVD release

Flyboys never made it to cinema over here in the UK so I assumed this was a big flop at the box office. Looks OK in the trailers though and US feedback from aviation buffs was generally favourable as long as you suspend all belief in historical fact so I will certainly be getting the DVD.

I think we all thought it would do better and it didn't.
I was really supprised it has only made $13,005,938 in the 11 weeks it has been out in the U.S. Boxoffice.
Last week alone it only made $118.00 in only 2 theaters....not too good.
The story line was great i thought and the actors did a outstanding job in the movie.
It also had great reviews.....So what happened ???
I do know from what i am hearing this DVD is being listed starting at $31.29
for it's Jan 30,2007 release.

Re: "Flyboys" DVD release

Just remeber that soem of the best movies were flops at the box office. The American Pie movies didn't do great at the theatres, and now they are considered great. Same with Old School. I own all of the above mentioned, and will be adding Flyboys to my collection as well.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: "Flyboys" DVD release

It's too bad it didn't do well at the BO b/c Hollwood will see that and not do another of its kind for a while. Not the right formula maybe?? No Ben Aflac? No love making on the parachute hangar?
Maybe if they put Nicholas Cage in and had him yell alot and tackle people?

I missed it somehow but plan to own it on DVD. I rented it and FOOF and just finished FOOF.

Hope this is better.

We need a Memphis Belle type flick with fighter planes. That was a hit and had a great cast and WWII theme. Maybe the Peter Jackson Dambusters remake will be all we dream of!?!?

Re: "Flyboys" DVD release

Due to the less than glowing reviews "Flyboys" garnered, I skipped it at the theatre and waited for the DVD on my big screen. I must say you chaps are certainly more forgiving than I when it comes to the flick. What a bloated,over-produced, badly acted, cliche ridden, thin-plotted bunch of drivel! The romantic sub-plot is as interesting as a bowl of oatmeal and my did she learn English in a hurry! The combat scenes are totally unbelievable with flimsy WW1 aircraft zooming about like F-16s. I had no idea of the climb and dive rates of those things. And the firepower! Of course, while other guys take a few rounds and blow up, our hero Rawley gets stitched up like a rag doll and still flies merrily along. That cowboy can not only fly but shoot a revolver with unbelievable accuracy- the best shooting I've ever seen in any movie. Ralphie would have been amazed at how that guy got his eye shot out. And Cassidy taking out two Tripes with a stunning reversals, even shaving the wing off one with his wheels. And where'd the Germans get all those Triplanes? Did they not come until later in the war (1917) and in numbers of only 300 or so? Maybe the producers thought we couldn't tell Allied from Axis unless one had three wings. And talk about stereotypes- sneering Germans that shoot helpless guys on the ground, the cowboy, the black guy, the religious guy, the disgraced rich guy, the guy who can't shoot straight, the French guy, the old hand. Sheesh! And the plot is about a deep as Snoopy versus the Red Baron. Too bad they made this flick as an action movie for kids. I would've loved to seen something the least bit factual. I'm sure there were stories that would've been worthwhile for the film. That said, did I enjoy the film? Yes, for what it was- a charicature of the real thing. Did I love it? No, but it's all we'll get for awhile. Now, where is my Blue Max DVD? It might get the taste of BS out of my mouth. Cheers!

Re: "Flyboys" DVD release

PSSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTT. It is based on a true story. The pilots, the girl, the lion, and the planes. Remember it is a movie not a documentary. I thought it was a cool movie. Not everything has to be so factual. It is based on a true story, and the character development is from real pilots. They changed their names becuse they did fictionalize it some. The landing gear thing did happen! I will dig the articl eout, but it was in an Aviation History magazine.

There's lot's of movies that are based on true stories. My main issue with most movies like this is that Hollywood in their ultimate wisdom either takes it so far away form that story (ie U571) or dumb it down so much it's a joke (most likely they'll do both). But then again they are not aiming their movies at my demographic - They are squarely aimed at the teen-aged market who seem to have the attention span of a goldfish.

Got to say that I'm with you on this one Migmauler -- I wanted to like it, really did, but most of your comments are right on target IMHO. I can put up with creative license, but it was just so cliched and the flight scenes, while entertaining, did not have much authenticity to them. But it was more the story, and the leading actors, that really left me cold... there's a reason this one went from the big screen to DVD pretty quickly.
