Most Interesting Tanks for Collectors

As a serious collector and detailer of model tanks and other AFVs I tend to favor unusual designs, with odd features, creative camouflage schemes, etc---even if they weren't all that successful in combat, or were used improperly with unfortunate results. Among the WWII entries, the most interesting tanks or AFVs are France's Char B--a well armored giant with a hull-mounted 75mm canon and a one-man turret sporting a smaller anti-tank weapon, Great Britain's Matilda II-- also a throwback,design-wise, the U.S.A.'s M-18 Hellcat--a speedy tank hunter and Germany's "Puma" armored car---with a 76mm cannon, probably the best of its kind. Among the post- WWII types I find Sweden's S-Tank and Israel's Merkava series to be particularly interesting. Do any of you Tank/AFV enthusiasts agree?

Re: Most Interesting Tanks for Collectors

To be honest, if it has treads and a gun I am in love with it lol. Since I was a boy I have had a love for tanks, the sherman my all time fav, but love any german tanks from world war two up to the present day. I also love light tanks such as the stuart family of tanks and the chaffe as well. I have more books on tanks then just about anything else at home and can never get enough of reading about them.

Re: Most Interesting Tanks for Collectors

I like the following:

M4s of all types to include the T6
M-10 / Achilles / M36 TDs
M3 Lee / Grant
M2 / M2A1 US Medium
M2 / M3 / M5 Stuart versions
T26E3 / M26 Pershing
Churchills
Comet
Matilda Mk II
Panzer IIIs and IVs
StuG IIIs
Panthers
King Tigers
Hetzers
JadgPanthers

On the modern front:

M1A2
M60A1 / A3
Chally II
Leopard 2A6
Merkavas
M41 Bulldog

And while the Char b1 bis is a nice looking tank, its the only French one I can get interested in. I've thought of doing a diorama with a Leo 2A6 in panzer grey passing a burned out LeClerc in that WW2 cammo as a joke. Along with a OD Abrams and a caunter cammo'd Challenger.

Re: Most Interesting Tanks for Collectors

I'd like to see a M1A2 SEP w/ TUSK applied. Or else a M1A2, desert tan, and devoid of all markings. And knowing Dragon, that would be pretty easy to produce.

Don't do what BDE tells you to do. Do what BDE would want you to do.

Re: Most Interesting Tanks for Collectors

Besides the coveted Merkava, the other modern tank I would like to see made in 1:72 is French AMX-30. Isareali Super Sherman would be nice as well.

the AMX 30 is made in 1.72 scale by D'Agostino. I bought one with a magazine in Polish when I visited Crakov a few months ago. A well-detailed, die-cast and plastic model, it has a basic dark green finish with no weathering.

Re: Most Interesting Tanks for Collectors

Does any company make WWI tanks such as the ones that fought at the battle of Cambrai in 1917?

I've not seen any in diecast, however the French company, Gaso.line makes some in plastic -about 1:48 scale. These come in kit form or already assembled, painted etc. The latter are sold by The Motor Pool, which currently lists the French Renault FT-17, and British Whippet, Mark IV Male and Mark IV female versions. These are expensive with prices ranging from $120 to$180. You might also check the French website, Quarter-kit.com, which sells this line in both forms. If you want ready made make sure to check with them on this score when buying. Regarding the FT-17, I just noticed a listing for a ready made plastic version of this tank in Historic Aviation's latest flyer. It's about 6 inches in length and sells for $100 ( the manufacturer is not identified ). Finally, I seem to remember that Admiral was planning to do this tank in 1:72 scale diecast but this company has been strangely silent of late, so who knows.

Tophat ,many years ago Airfix made a couple of WW1 kits one of them was a Cambria tank if memory serves me well.
I dont know if these are still available.
